    Fix a scratched LCD?

Silver polish did not appreciably change the appearance of the major scratch, but it did help with a lighter one (barely visible in the photo), and it also did a wonderful job cleaning fingerprints and other crud off the plastic. It absolutely didn't hurt anything. I'm going to try a couple...

What do we all look like

Here's some pictures of my messy, messy office. Because I have a camera. And I'm bored. Yes, I do manage to do work in this space. Bare hardware visible (stuff not in bags or boxes) is mostly dead or too old to be useful. There are several brown boxes from Newegg in the picture and quite a...

    Fix a scratched LCD?

The bad scratch is about 6 inches long and is visible from 10 feet away. It's also visible when the display is actually on. It's a bad scratch. I shall take a picture.

    Fix a scratched LCD?

Well... a long and arduous googling leads me to believe that I might be able to repair the scratches with silver polish. Meh. May as well try; the screen is already ruined anyway.

    Socket A upgrade advice please

Tannin, that's such a marginal increase in processing power, there's no way it's worthwhile. There's not going to be any subjective difference for paugie. He's got something that works right now, and it's very possible that the vendor could be pulling a fast one on him somehow (remarked chip...

Looking for a computer for a friend

I very seldom get to build "high end" systems other than my own. I normally look at Gigabyte's offerings first. I generally only proceed from there if there is some feature or set of features that is not available on a Gigabyte product.

    Fix a scratched LCD?

Someone brought me a really nice 19" Dell LCD today that has a couple giant scratches down the front. Their toddler got caught in the cord or something and I guess it went for a little ride off a desk and over some legos or something. There's nothing wrong with the monitor other than the...

    Intel strikes back

My take is that if you're on a new-ish processor, you're almost always going to get better performance than on an old one. You're fretting about a performance differential that's probably going to be too minute to notice, and you're worrying about performance on a top-end chip at that. The...

    More AMD price cuts

Yay! I can officially cut WAY back on the number of PCs I own. I'm going from 14 to eight, including two notebooks. X2s + gobs of RAM + VMware means I don't need half my computers any more.

Free Dynamic DNS? Preferably for my own domain name?

There's such a thing as a PTR record on a DNS server. PTR records redirect only textual domain name to another, which can then be looked up on the appropriately authoritative DNS server for that domain. That's what ddrueding is doing. The only down side to doing that is when a user actually...

AM2 is the platform of choice for current AMD hardware. Socket 939 is classed as legacy hardware. Pretending you're from Euroland lets you use the higher frequencies. And if you have a hackable AP (mine isn't, the WRT55AG doesn't run Linux like the WRT54G does), there's usually firmware to boost your signal output by as much as 20 - 30%.
