SSDs - State of the Product?

Sechs mentioned in one of his posts that coming from a fast scsi system the difference is not as much as people have been lead to believe. I sort of second that. Depending on your drive choice, and controller, you could get a system that was equal, or slower. I can do that. Just plug the two...

I don't know if the setup is worth the money, but, I think it may have put another 5 years useage on this machine. It's noticeably snappier, certain things happen MUCH faster, others not so much then SCSI, but, I'm not sending this setup back anytime soon... Two Vertex Turbos, 30 gig, raid 0...

Boot is 1:52, thanks to every slot having either SATA or SCSI, and, no way to disable the onboard SCSI boot, that has no drives connected. Firefox is between 2-4 seconds. Photoshop loads in 5 seconds. Microsoft Word 2000 in under one second. IE 8 in about 4 seconds. ESET took a LONG time to scan the C disk. I'll post that next time I run the thing. Slow opening would be Firefox, Vuze. About 8 seconds to open Power DVD 9 Ultra. Load add/remove control panel: 8.22...

    PCI-X SATA 2.0 Raid controller?

It's kind of odd that programs that take a lot of time, NOD 32 for example, even at Realtime, use about 10% of the processors, and, the read on C drive was NOT fast. Overall it's faster, but, I just don't see that much speed increase, except in a few, very specific areas.

I'm seeing your point, Sam. I guess for a while, the commodity end was not important, since most of what I did was not real fancy. I do wonder what the limit is on the 133MHZ/64 bit slot, speed wise at this point.

theSwede. OK. My SATA card does about 150 mb/sec. The Vertex Turbo is supposed to do 255 mb/sec. So, that is a huge loss in speed. It's real clear with mine that the processors are capable of handling pretty much everything I throw at them, but, despite the SCSI, I still have a huge amount of room to transfer data more quickly. The 4 port card, if it is 200% faster, should give me at least 300 MB/sec, and, hopefully...

    PCI-X SATA 2.0 Raid controller?

I decided to go with a 9550SXU, and wait for SATA 6 motherboards, before I do the full monty. The two to 4 vertex turbos should come in around 300-500 mb/sec, on that controller, I hope. That should be enough to hold me over until SATA 6 is pretty common. My goal is to have a boot array with...

    PCI-X SATA 2.0 Raid controller?

OK. My perception is based on using the Raid 0 Vertex Turbo setup, on the 9500S. Real problem is finding a PCI-X raid card that has channels fast enough to even make it worth raiding the SSDs. Apparentlty the 9550SXU is 200% faster or more, then my 9500. Since the 9500 does 62 mb/sec, that should mean around 190 mb/sec per channel. Problem is, they are 300 dollars, and...
