i7 920 Motherboard and operating system?

10 years since I got a new computer, for me, and not work, etc... VERY EXCITED... MY cpu setup rates around 880 on that website. This one should be over 6000 cpu test wise. THAT is a huge improvement... and, nothing else is going to be slower, in fact, EVERYTHING will be much faster.... Mad...

That's the OS raid 0, right? I've found the numbers go about in half with ATTO when you actually put something on the array, like an OS and work. Still, not changing my mind. David, what do you format your raid 0 arrays with, block size? That's why I start at 64, by the way...

HMMM. 1500 dollars for the 5570 is a bit rich for my blood. My monitor is a Samsung 21.5" next to a Vizio 37" XVT. Seasonics generally should work. I think this one is 500-600. Don't remember. Also the Supermicro boards only support one i7 cpu, at least the ones I'm looking at. Two of those...

    iPod>iPhone>iPad

Perhaps that should read: Maxipad? The Mac is now based on the COOL scale. As long as the Mac loyalists believe, and buy, Apple will sell computers. This thing just looks like a big iPhone, for 500 bucks, and, it's sort of an expensive, slow, Netbook? Nothing new. If it looks cool, it is...

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

One HUGE plus is I finally have a screen I can read the entire history of National Geographic on. WOW! I feel your pain. Ubuntu has installed on a couple laptops, and been useable. That said, I REALLY wonder why you don't go with a hardware raid card? I'm pretty sure the card I paid 75 bucks for, 9500, IIRC, 8 ports, would do in about 5 minutes what you are trying to do, but, I'm not sure...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Figured out the DVD and some Bluray problems with the ATI 4670, and PowerDVD 9 Ultra. With newer movies, hardware decoding works great. With older Bluray, some of them anyway, and regular DVD's, you have to use software decoding on this machine. Strange, but that single setting is what was...

I've got until Feb 3 to consider. The pluses are T-Mobile is worse then AT&T, at least in the areas I use it in, signal avaliability wise. In Napa, some of the schools have NO reception at all. However, their 10 dollar internet, and, Samsung Highlight phone make up for a bit of that. Would...

SSDs - State of the Product?

Not for most of my useage. I may get spikes in the first couple cores to 60%, but, they go back down below 50% quickly. I was just testing a Bluray disk, and the processors spiked to about 80% briefly, then settled down to about 20-40% while the DVD was playing.
  47. Santilli

SSDs - State of the Product?

Except for that one program, even playing DVD's, or Bluray run at around 40%, and thats pretty much all of them. I'll do a bit more cpu watching, but, most of my tasks just don't stress the Xeons.

SSDs - State of the Product?

I know the system bus is about 1200 MB/sec, vs. David's which is around 3500 MB/SEC IIRC from the Ram disk tests. Still don't really get much over 50% of processor useage, maybe a 60% spike opening programs now. Only one program I run takes nearly all the processor power.

Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

I guess I can justify the Samsung 21.5" monitors being 175.-270 dollars, only because they are a life warranty at Costco. When comparing the Samsung computer monitors to this Vizio 37", and the value, I feel used and abused when I look at how much I paid for the Samsungs, and, what I got for it...
