I second Time. I think it's SSE, primarily. Going to SS standard is bound to improve performance. Sage SW sucks big time (eons ago I worked at a company that got acquired by Sage). Act was acquired by Symantec at one point of time, IIRC, and then sold to Sage. So it's bloatware all right. But...

    400GB drives in RAID 0, 5 & 10

I'm the poor church mouse of the bunch :) I run 2 x 250GB Hitachi SATAs. I have 2 x 320GB Samsung SATAs that are a year old and still in the box. :eek4: Woe unto me. I plan to buy a DSLR in the next 6 months (waiting for the D90 reviews; it'll be that or the D300). I'll probably have to jack...

Driver Reinstall When Switching USB Ports

Not true. This happens even if the device is installed to the same exact port. Just happened with my APC UPS which got unplugged; when I plugged it back in, XP did the same "new hw discovered" shit.

    Mobo and CPU upgrade

    How far do you go?

You guys are forgetting hardware. It was all proprietary stuff before. With windows, hw became a commodity - interchangeable, cheap, reliable, readily available. The mini manufacturer I worked for went under because they never saw the Wintel tsunami coming.

    Looking for power bricks

Don't people like Kensington make "universal" power bricks and separately sell an array of the pins that will go into the devices? I'll see if I can rustle up some links I may have saved (it'll have to wait till the weekend, though).

MAC and PC common storage help

My Buffalo wireless router and clients are cool to the touch. My wired SMC router gets hot. I can fry eggs on my current DSL modem. Such heat to me indicates poor design; a lot of electricity being unnecessarily consumed and dissipated as heat.

    VoIP woes: Troubleshooting?

I've used (and continue to do so) Vonage over 2mbit connections and have had zero issues. No QoS settings in the router; just plain vanilla connections. In fact, the internet line is connected to a wi-fi router, and the Vonage adapter is on the client end of the wi-fi. Quality is land-line like...

    Rigging power supplies together?

I don't think ganging two supplies up in parallel is a good idea; most certainly current will flow from one to the other with strange consequences. I'm no expert, jtr can describe this better. You're better off using two the way Fushigi described.

End of the World As We Know It

It's not rumor. Some analyst bugger thinks Wachovia is severely exposed in the mortgage crisis. They were a nice, solid bank, then thy got greedy, buying up other financial institutions for incredibly high valuations. Then the sub-prime shit happened.

Producer: CD quality isn't good enough

He's being unrealistic about the kind of quality he wants everyone to have. But I sure can relate to where he's coming from. Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

India did. During the infamous Emergency days of the mid-seventies, Sanjay Gandhi undertook a campaign to sterilize people (mainly through vasectomies). Global Overpopulation: The gorrila in the room?

AFAIK, every religion says to go forth and multiply. I think this is because in the olden days infant mortality was high and life expectancy was low, and societies were more secure and successful when they had a minimum mass. Today the situation is reverse, so there is no need to multiply, but...
