    USB Network Print Servers

GDI printers have actually crept in to laser printing, so unfortunately you aren't always safe with laser printers any more, either. Are there any modern postscript printers that don't have LAN functions built in?

    Lenovo Thinkpads

I'm looking for a less bulky system for my living room, and I'm curious about the build quality of the unit. If I don't like it, I'll sell it to one of my coworkers, probably for the full purchase price.

I bought one of the little X100s that is today's woot.com item. I'll be very curious to see how it stacks up to a 12" Edge.

    Rain and flood

The news reports I had heard have all discussed northeastern Oz as a disaster area, rather than simply Eastern Oz, which is where Brisbane is. Between this and the flash fires a couple years ago, I suspect Oz is feeling rather put-upon by the weather lately.

Rolling your own offsite internet based backup?

I have a setup where one of my machines at home logs in to a remote machine via SSH and copies whatever stuff TrueImage put on its removable drive that day. Those backups are fairly small, maybe 250MB/day. The copy still takes a half hour. I wouldn't want to try to pull gigabytes of crap...

    Audio Equipment

I tried a whole bunch of amps and preamps and a bunch of receivers. I went to audio-specialty stores in and around Chicago after I had exhausted the selection at giant electronics chains. I had a mix CD with eight or nine tracks in a variety of styles I'm extremely familiar with and did a lot of...

Twitter can be used as a replacement for RSS if you follow a lot of blogs ("Just made a new post at...) and in some cases can be useful if you're closely following breaking news. I wouldn't pretend that any ordinary person needs to tweet though.

    Sandy Bridge

There were large metallic stickers on the boxes of several motherboards my students purchased for the last computer building class I taught. I distinctly saw them. Two Asus boards, one Gigabyte. "Sandy Bridge" compatible. Big letters. Hard to miss. Now, I don't know if a reseller slapped them...

Text messages cost money to send and receive. They're very limited in terms of what they can express and they're tied to telephone and the highly uncertain states that go along with them (Is it on? Is it in service? Is the recipient looking for a text message?). There's no reason for anyone who...

    Audio Equipment

That's been my impression for a long time, yes. Audio stuff is tough because there's so damned much pseudoscience crap out. In the end it's all subjective. Don't buy stuff just because someone else thinks it's awesome. That person might be a nutjob who thinks wooden handles make amplifiers...

It is worth getting upset over at the point that someone tells you that you HAVE to have a facebook account to interact with them. It's possible, but I don't think the marginal improvement is worth the investment. Handy, I have fantastically expensive speakers. Speakers that cost more than my car. They're REALLY nice. And my receiver can make them louder than I could ever hope to play them. The preamp is basically just going to make the speakers you're using it with louder. That's cool and everything but I'm not sure it's needed with a decent receiver.

Rumor - 4TB hard drive from Hitachi

My boot drives are almost always plain old 250GB SATA drives or 80GB SSDs, LM. The assumption I make when I set up a system is that there will be at least five hard disks in it. The other four will be as ginormous as I can afford and they will be used in some kind of array.

I'd like better onboard graphics as well, but that's not a make or break issue for purchasing a system. question Junking traditional TV for streaming only

I'm perfectly willing to rip DVDs and I have a seriously huge library of local content (~7500GB). question Junking traditional TV for streaming only

I run btguard on one notebook that doesn't do a whole lot besides that. Most of the stuff I'm downloading is, frankly, not going to get me in trouble. I will say that you should probably do an "advanced install" of their client, because the software they include otherwise is utorrent 2.0, not 2.2.

question Junking traditional TV for streaming only

There's a speed reduction. I get probably 250kB/sec, which is fast enough. I don't use btguard for everything, just the stuff where I think it matters. Everything I've read says their encryption is good enough and they definitely aren't logging anything, which is what I want it for. Ratios...

At least 90% of the time, 3D is a gimmick, but I've seen it both ways and I have to say that Tron is a movie where the 3D does enrich the experience. I hate the glasses and the way that color gets washed out in a 3D presentation, though.
