Ancient Computer; Modern Browser, Security software

I have a customer who is still using Windows 2000 systems on a daily basis. Those machines aren't connected to the internet, so they're basically fine, but they're also 10 years old and still being used daily. My least-favorite customer just hired two people and wanted me to put two 2GHz P4s...

Ancient Computer; Modern Browser, Security software

Something I'm seeing right now is crappy old machines that are getting pulled out of whatever closet or basement that are being pressed in to service, or home users deciding to tough it out with their ancient system for another year. Yes, this probably is related to the current economic...

Ancient Computer; Modern Browser, Security software

Does anyone have any strong feelings about how to deal with old computers and modern software? I'm talking about 10 year old hardware, the sort of thing that might've been upgraded to XP when XP first came out. I'm noticing at this point that even something like Spybot Search and Destroy is too...

Building a home NAS - feedback on build

There's at least one company that offers a 24 3.5" bay 4U chassis for $200. They're kind of crummy as far as chassis go, but that does get you to the kind of storage density you're talking about.

Howell, you know that when Foxit is asking to update, most of the time it's to address security issues, right? And that those issues are largely created by the file format itself?

AMD Phenom II X6 1090T is here.

Ask them for a small part sometime, like a cable or fan adapter. Watch them look for that part for two minutes and then disappear. Last time I was at Microcenter I wound up having to explain to a group of employees that the guy who was asking about "iSCSI" was not talking about the hard drives...

Microcenter seems to always have some deal or other going on CPUs. I'm guessing it's a loss leader for them, to get people in the door. On the other hand, the employees know nothing and can't even locate smaller products most of the time. If I didn't have a customer a few blocks away from one I...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I'd say it's much more important to have fast access to operating system files that are in constant use than whatever userland data. As far as the pagefile, Windows wants there to be one, and constantly shifts 4kB blocks in and out of it even on systems with tremendous amounts of RAM (8GB, in...

Something very similar happened in about 2002, when everybody everyone started putting USB 2.0 stickers on products without elaborating that you can implement USB 2.0 without the 480Mbit Hi-Speed part of the spec. Now in that case the literature does say 3Gbps, but who the hell knows what was...
