    I hate Linux! (v. Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS + RAID-1 + Encryption + LVM)

Slackware is VERY Unix-traditional. It's probably not a good choice for someone who doesn't want to invest time in really getting to know the Unix way of doing things. Personally, I use Centos on my home Linux servers, but my configuration at this point is pretty bare-bones. I've been using...

    I hate Linux! (v. Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS + RAID-1 + Encryption + LVM)

I couldn't begin to tell you what the issue might be with that. I'm not an Ubuntu fan. It has too many Debian cooties (Debian people being the FSF "It has to be GNU/Linux and not just Linux" morons). Hopefully you made a partition for /home and another for everything else. Anyway, if you...

I've never had employer provided insurance either. I have catastrophic coverage only. I have no idea where or who gets corporate IT jobs other than those on contract basis, and I vaguely suspect that in the future more and more jobs with be defined-length contracts rather than permanent...

    Fancy i7 cooling

Well, the Zipang 2 is definitely silent. It's also parallel to the plane of the motherboard, so there's no uncertainty about which position or orientation I should use for the fan. It does overhang my DIMM slots more than I'd like, but I can reach under it, so it's not a big deal. Not bad for $35.

Acer does not fit. Ever. Toshiba has business products and business support, but their business products are still too crappy to merit consideration. I know a couple people who SWEAR mainstream Asus notebooks are good products, but I've only seen a couple non-Eee examples and they didn't seem...

Zotac GF9300-G-E MINI-ITX, how many simultaneous displays?

Most boards with multiple integrated video ports only support using one at a time. The last time I went looking for something that would run integrated DVI + Integrated VGA, I wound up with an oddball Asus board based on very specific wording in the product specs that indicated that it could use...

    Netbook for the wife

To me, anything that gets consumer rather than business class support (and to the best of my knowledge Sony does not have a business support division for computer products) is consumer garbage. The HP Envy branding is (or at least was) used for gaming products, which is its own special...

    Fancy i7 cooling

The stock HSF for an i7 is frustratingly not silent, so today while I was out and about I bought a Scythe Zipang 2 cooler with a 140mm fan on it. I'm just getting ready to take this PC down to fit it, but I was wondering if anyone else is using a non-stock cooling solution for their i5/i7...

    I hate Linux! (v. Ubuntu Server 8.04 LTS + RAID-1 + Encryption + LVM)

Let's see... RAID, Volume Management and Encryption. Short of using an alien filesystem like HFS, I can't actually imagine a more complicated setup. You admit to not having *nix experience and you're not really asking for help. Maybe a setup like this should not have been your first choice?

I keep an application repository so I don't need or care about discs for longer than the first time I touch them, and most of the software I deal with reaches my hands as .ISOs in the first place. Meh. I've been running 3.6 for a couple weeks on at least a few machines. I don't like that new tabs are added immediately to the...

I suspect you'll have a PCIe x1 option for that. You could also look around to see if there's an ethernet-to-parallel print server on Ebay or your local equivalent. The motherboards whose printer ports I'm familiar with (mostly Intel boards but also SOME Gigabyte boards for this purpose) have...

It sounds like the Gigabyte adapter is barely supported in the first place. The PCI cards I buy (here in the US) are low-profile cards made by Syba. They retail for US$14. Generally, I find myself connecting older HP laser printers to them, but other than remembering which driver I need to...

Probably not for a while. They're claiming lower resource utilization and faster scanning speed. There's more to it than that. It has all the drawbacks of using a Business/Professional copy of Windows (10 CALs) with basically none of the advantages of Server; single sign-on seems like it would be a no-brainer but it's not there. There's also nothing to make it back up another storage...

BluRay playback happens in a virtual machine that needs control over both audio and video on your PC. PCI-X SATA 2.0 Raid controller?

Greg, the advantage of SCSI in terms of performance on a desktop system is about 99% due to the lowered access times available to 10k and 15k spindles. Televisions as monitors: What are you using, and why?

Brightness can be turned down. Picture can be adjusted generally. There's a bit of a down side if you're right up close, which is that the pixel pitch on TVs is higher than true monitors, but I don't think most people would notice that, and the screen size can more than make up for it. I'm...
