What you're describing is almost certainly a problem with your power supply or motherboard; probably motherboard, in my experience. You really need to try your setup on another PC. I will say that there's nothing inherent to using WMI controls that should have any impact on your disk drive...

If you're talking about a Barracuda drive that ends in -A or -AS, then yes, they're slow. They have firmware issues. It's generally not an issue, though.

It's not worth the outlay of cash to spend that much on a motherboard. And it's worth the money to have a proper CPU instead of a Celeron. I wouldn't look at anything from Intel that's not an E or Q series. The E2200s don't offer that much compared to the E4500s, so that's pretty much my floor...

I'll have to look into Clonezilla. DOS-based Ghost is problematic at this point, since its support for SATA drives and controllers is iffy to nonexistent. TrueImage works, and works well, but it's missing scripted restore and multicast support that I would really like to have.

You need to be careful in replacing the fan at the top of the P180; it uses a pair of clips instead of screws to hold one side of the fan in the case, and the only brand of premium fan I found that had a wide enough lip to accommodate those clips was Antec's.

I'm saying that the only time hard disk performance is a major issue for most users, it's seek time (lots of little files) rather than STR that is the more important component in performance. People generally aren't doing the things that make a drive's STR a factor in overall system performance...

Another annoyance: to prepare Vista install images, I have to download 1GB of crap from MS. For 2000, XP, Server 2003, automated installs requires something less than 1MB of extra files.

It's the same for all 32 bit versions of Windows, including Server, though certain hardware exists that has a workaround for the limit.
