    Something Random

I don't get OT. I'm a salaried employee. My time in the office is technically flexible, so I kind of come and go as I please, but I stay late a lot because the things I need to do can't always be done when there are other people around. Deploying a dual boot XP/Vista setup is an utter...

    Seagate External Sata Woes

What you're describing is almost certainly a problem with your power supply or motherboard; probably motherboard, in my experience. You really need to try your setup on another PC. I will say that there's nothing inherent to using WMI controls that should have any impact on your disk drive...

Bluetooth headsets hurt my ears. I've tried three of them now and they are just not comfortable.

    Something Random

I've been a little depressed since turning 32 and still sucking at life. Plus the fact that I have 10 ~16 hour days working at my trainer job because of shit that is other people's fault, and, well, I'm a little annoyed.

I've had students who have had it happen, but the ones I buy (Transcend) don't seem to have a problem with it, and seem to average washing one about once a month these days.

Reading that made me die a little on the inside. I love all the hard disks, except the ones made by Western Digital.

Swift. However, now that people are aware of the problem, I'll bet someone will have a fix for it in a couple days.

    More Vista nonsense

I've loaded betas of Longhorn server a couple times now. The "server" parts seem basically untouched, but the sluggishness and unreasonably high RAM use that are in Vista are present in Longhorn as well. Actually I think that if you dig back far enough, you'll find a post by me on that subject...

    WD greenpower 1TB drive

If you're talking about a Barracuda drive that ends in -A or -AS, then yes, they're slow. They have firmware issues. It's generally not an issue, though.

    Build your own Router/AP

I built it and sold it to a customer who'd had too many WRT54Gs die. They balked at the price - I think I charged them $500 where they were used to paying $60, but after explaining that I could actually fix it if it broke and the individual parts all had long warranties - and the industrial...

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

It's not worth the outlay of cash to spend that much on a motherboard. And it's worth the money to have a proper CPU instead of a Celeron. I wouldn't look at anything from Intel that's not an E or Q series. The E2200s don't offer that much compared to the E4500s, so that's pretty much my floor...

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

Anyway, if I'm looking for longer-term hardware support, there's several things I'd like to say. 1. AMD sticks with sockets a lot longer than Intel does. Phenom (next-gen AMD) will happily sit on an AM2 board and just work, just as socket 939 and socket A were wonderful investments in the time...

New PC for my brother-best MB/processor combo?

Uh, no. XP 32bit is limited to 4GB of RAM. XP64 (which you'd have to buy as well) can support more, but then you're stuck in a magical land where no one has written device drivers. Unfortunately, there's another limitation that you'll hit before that, at the 3GB (AMD) or 3.5GB (Intel) mark...

    Military Protest in the Philippines

    DriveImage XML

I'll have to look into Clonezilla. DOS-based Ghost is problematic at this point, since its support for SATA drives and controllers is iffy to nonexistent. TrueImage works, and works well, but it's missing scripted restore and multicast support that I would really like to have.

    120mm case fans

You need to be careful in replacing the fan at the top of the P180; it uses a pair of clips instead of screws to hold one side of the fan in the case, and the only brand of premium fan I found that had a wide enough lip to accommodate those clips was Antec's.

    WD greenpower 1TB drive

I'm saying that the only time hard disk performance is a major issue for most users, it's seek time (lots of little files) rather than STR that is the more important component in performance. People generally aren't doing the things that make a drive's STR a factor in overall system performance...

    WD greenpower 1TB drive

I'd say that performance is inconsequential for media storage and playback; 802.11 or 100Mbit ethernet are both going to present more of a bottleneck than the drive. I'd say media storage and playback is the primary application for a 1TB drive. Personal or small business backup, maybe...

I give a crap about them being 5400rpm drives. I have no problem with that at all. No one is buying 1TB drives to be super-fast. Objectively, though, if they're going to be slower, there needs to be more of a price differential than is currently available since there's no normal pricing penalty...
