    looking for server case suggestions.

My first-ever programming job was done in a tiny, underventilated, uninsulated office above a heavy equipment garage. Carbon Monoxide and diesel fumes usually had me completely loopy by about 10:00AM. So I know of what you speak, i.

The place where I work is on this absolutely beautiful, natural forest campus with a southern exposure. It's fall and it's really pretty outside, but except at lunch time, or unless I go hang out in someone else's office, I don't get to see it. It's not uncommon for me to find out that there've...

I don't like Windows 98. Or Windows XP. Or Windows on computer cases. But I wish my office had a Window or two. Does that count?

I suggested that case to LunarMist a month or so ago. I've never seen a *bad* Lian Li case, but then, I've never wanted to pay for one, either. Have you looked at what SuperMicro has to offer? Something like an SC742 with an extra 5-in-3 bay?

Why you shouldn't use a Syba SD-ATA133R for RAID

Western Digital is also responsible for the failure of Democracy in Afghanistan. See how easy it is? Honestly, though, you got one bad card. I don't think that's a reason to indict the whole brand. It's not like my had-more-drives-fail-than-actually-owned-in-a-single-year experience with WD.

I think there are more bad things than that. But of course, that's Tea's list, and Sock Puppets presumably have a very limited idea of "bad", unless they've been spending too much time with DrunkenBastard.

    Computer randomly shuts off

Maxblast doesn't work with drives attached to RAID controllers. In fact, if you go read the thread in the Tools forum, there's a LOT of things that make Maxblast not work right. You'll have to move your drive to one of the native, motherboard-controlled IDE channels. As a general rule, you...

    Windows dual boot

So, you want to write to an NTFS volume under Linux? That doesn't work. Well, OK, there are tricks you can do, but in general, it's discouraged because Linux doesn't grok NTFS security descriptors and therefore might be screwing something important up while it's writing to the drive. That would...

    Camera suggestions please?

I really liked my Canon G-series cameras as well. As far as CF, the main issues I see are that it is the best-supported flash format. Innovations and high capacities happen in the CF realm first, then funnel down to all the stupid formats, probably because the of the demands of the pros and...

    AMD sockets

Couple years ago I bought a Dell 2.4GHz, 533MHZ fsb P4 (it was $100, shipped, with a monitor). It was slow when I got it. So I added RAM. 512MB + the 256MB it started with. Then I switched up the hard disk to something 7200rpm (as I recall, there was a 5400rpm drive in it to start). Still slow...

    The perfect notebook

I had the opportunity, yesterday, to work on a Dell XPS laptop. Two inches thick and 10lbs. if an ounce, unusually dim screen for a Dell, it was the hottest and loudest notebook I've ever seen. Oh, and no modular features, either. For the life of me I can't see the point in something like that...

    Windows dual boot

Dynamic volumes are bootable, sechs. The Windows installer does not create dynamic disks at install time, and diskpart.exe/Disk Management doesn't allow the change of the system volume once Windows is running. But if you partition and format a dynamic volume on another machine, Windows can...

    Google Print

It's very hard to make money as a writer, especially if you write for a living. Google Print is, in effect disassociating or anonymizing authorship from the written word (do you look at the copyright on anything else you get off the web?). In that kind of environment, it's hard to maintain...

    Cyberlink offer? Worth it?

PowerDVD is pretty much give away software. Almost no one needs the full version. Most people just want to be able to watch DVDs in their computer. The other stuff basically replicates what Nero does (version 7 just came out), but again, most people don't need most of those tools. I'd pass...

Nonetheless, that is the case. I'm sure there are parts that overlap, but the laptops are indeed made by different companies. Inspirons are made by the same company that makes most Gateway and HP vomitbooks.

    Notebooks

Asus notebooks look like a pretty good deal. They can be customized in much the same way as a desktop and have nicer chassis than your typical vomit-book. I have no idea how durable they are, how hot they get or whether their service is worth a handfull of spit.
  37. Mercutio

    Notebooks

They aren't even close, and a cursory examination of even the chassis is quite enlightening in that regard. Latitudes are manufactured to MUCH higher standards and have Latitude-standard parts across the product line. Inspiron = Vomit box. Lunar, have you looked at IBM X-series models?

Latitudes are better than many other options (Compaq, HP, S*ny, Toshiba), not as good as others (IBM). Inspirons are a reason to slide headfirst down a razor blade into a bucket of iodine.
