winipcfg or ipconfig /renew equivalent under Linux

If an interface is specified as controlled by DHCP, I believe it will continue to make requests until it receives an address. You could always ifconfig your DHCPless interface to something static and then do "ifconfig eth0 (or whatever) auto-dhcp" when your server is back up and running.

Lately I've been installing the IE skin for Firefox and changing the firefox icon to the blue E, then deleting all the IE shortcuts. Amazingly enough, absolutely no one has complained about it.

    Confessions of an Engineering Washout

It's important to add that the opposite is also true. I can credit my ability to deal with non-techies with the three years I spent managing computer labs in Purdue's Liberal Arts building, but at the same time I don't think educated non-technical people should be excused from fundamental...

    NEWZ: Fujitsu 120GB 2.5-Inch SATA & PATA

The couple Supermicro SATA racks that I have are both *very* loud. Server-room loud. Loud enough to be heard over a 20" box fan on the high speed setting. And unfortunately, they really aren't any fun unless you're going to get them close to full. Someone should make some 5400rpm 500GB drives...

    Confessions of an Engineering Washout

My degree is in Computer Science. Not too much of a stretch from that to Engineering. Certainly a field of creditable difficulty. I went to one of "The" engineering schools in the US, and I saw what went on from day to day for four years. And what that was, was a lot of people who had no...

    Spybot updates off-line?

Also, WRT adaware... Just today I ran into something that was detected by Adaware that was missed by Norton AV 2005, Housecall, Spybot, Microsoft Antispyware and Spyware Sweeper, all completely up to date. I believe the file was called "QoLogic Downloader", which Adaware called a trojan and...

    Spybot updates off-line?

I've found that it makes a very big difference which update server you choose to get your updates from. I like Safer Networking (Europe) and SecurityWonks.net. If I don't pay attention and start grabbing the updates from EON (the Aussie site), I know I have a 20 minute wait ahead of me. Tannin...

    NEWZ: Fujitsu 120GB 2.5-Inch SATA & PATA

To be fair, that model apparently supports SAS, so I'm guessing there's a slight premium in that... Also those Supermicro enclosures are really, really loud. Or rather the fan that fits on the back of the unit is.

Santilli, With the best possible equipment, a 100Mbit switched network should give you a hair about 12MB/sec. Note the big B vs. the little b there. In this case, it looks like Pradeep expected Gigabit speeds (as in, the Cat5 cable was connected to a Gbit switch and a Gbit NIC), but Cat5...

Kiddie Game Playing in XP: issues and thoughts

As a general rule, XP runs about 85% of the entertainment software that has been made for Windows. Games are usually not the problem, especially since almost no games worth playing were made for Windows prior to the release of DirectX, and XP supports DirectX just fine. 16-bit games are the only...

I strongly prefer the Verbatim discs I get at Sam's Club. Usually $40 (but sometimes $30) for 50 16x +Rs. In a way, that's not as offensive as some other places to put ads - a Pepsi machine in City of Heroes (CoH does have advertisements, for fictional companies like "Mighty Mart" and "City of Gyros", which are fun enough that when I first started playing I ran around looking for all of them) might...

I really like BitComet's download manager. Love it, in fact.
