Apple to announce switch to Intel procs on Monday

Apparently the Nipple developer kits that're shipping out are using 3.6GHz P4 560s that use a standard Phoenix BIOS and NOT Openfirmware. Developers are reporting that they can dual book Linux or XP on those machines along with OSX. Given these things as fact, it's safe to say that whatever...

    A8N-SLI Data Corruption

Maybe crappy nvidia drivers. I've had complaints about every version that's ever been posted on nvidia's website. Mine were more stability issues than data corruption but in this case I'd look at Microsoft's driver for a while before I went blaming hardware.

What anti-spyware anti-adware combos do you use nowadays?

I do not get spyware. Or viruses. Of course, I know what I'm doing, and if I'm doing something that's anything other than perfectly safe, I do it on a *nix box. First thing I do is install Firefox. I've been keeping it, with all the plugins I need, on a flash drive that I just copy to other...

    Trend Penicillin update

There are corporate AV products that don't require subscription. One of the only good things about Symantec AV (the other being server-based management). But, OK, every modern AV program *I* am aware of eats CPU cycles for breakfast, and no one cares, 'since for the most part we're all driving...

REVIEW: "High Capacity Hard Drive Roundup"

I can buy three 160GB drives for $210. Seagates, with five year warranties, just like your SCSI units. I like fast access times but given the noise, heat and expense of big, fast SCSI drives, I can't see buying any more for home.

REVIEW: "High Capacity Hard Drive Roundup"

That's fine and well and good, until the moment you need storage in densities greater than 36GB, Greg. The 147GB units aren't even available used at TWICE the price of comparable ATA drives.

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

Supposedly, when they aren't crashing my computer, they are supposed to be considerably faster. Plus sometimes I install an update and forget to uncheck the box for the IDE driver.

Why do Socket 939 Boards suck so much?

I don't know, but my test image between an nforce 220 and nforce2 didn't work on the hardware I have. I'm dismissive of nvidia in the first place. It did not merit additional investigation. Via works. Intel works. For that matter, SiS works. OK, here's where I'm telling you that they don't...

    Internet service alternatives

802.16 at least where I am is really crummy service. Less reliable than cable and generally slower than DSL. It's a shared pipe too, like 802.11 or cable. You'll only get decent speed is there aren't many transceivers associated with your tower and if there aren't a lot of p2p fiends on your...

Er... Verizon FIOS is 30Mb/s service. Would you really worry about bandwidth?!? Also, Verizon is one of the "good guys" WRT to permissive TOS. I had trouble when I tried it before XP64 was officially released. It's probably better now. Anyway there is a very compelling reason to stick with 32-bit versions of windows: No 16-bit support. Ah! You say, "I don't use any 16-bit software!" Oddly enough, a lot of programs use 16-bit...

To borrow a word from Tannin: Shonk. MIPS is a term that gets thrown around a lot by Marketers who don't know what else to say about a processor. There might've been a time when it meant something useful, but everyone really interested in figuring out how powerful a CPU is looks at objective...

Newegg's prices, as a general rule, are so breathtakingly low that there's not much point in further discounting. That's the reason people show there. About $50. Normally it's much cheaper to use a coaxial SPDIF connection instead. 50' of 75-ohm coax with an RCA jack on either end is usually 1/5 that price, even from the kinds of places that want to rape you for cables. The other part of that if you're so far away from your 5.1 surround...

The funny thing is, 90% of the sound cards that are made either use a proprietary Creative chip, or have the same Crystal Media or Realtek chips as you get on motherboards. Philips used to have a decent chip, and now Via has the only generic premium chip.
