What should I do with this POS?

Pull the BIOS battery inside the case for a minute. If it's soldered in, strip some phone cable and lay the bare wire between the battery and something metal on the chassis, and flip the power on for a second. After that you will not have a password.

    Goodbye (for now)

I will be offline starting nowish until May 3rd, when a Comcast henchperson comes to bring me cable, between suckling goat and vestal virgin sacrifice-times. Then I shall have cable, internet and somewhat less soul than I have now.

    iTunes

Interesting thing: The obscure album I bought from itunes classical store a week ago is still listed as a "Top Album". I checked it on someone else's PC (one my account has never logged into). So now I'm thinking "Wow, the itunes classical store doesn't even sell 10 different albums in a week."...

NEWZ: 64-Bit Windows Available End Of April

    1. I've installed it. Driver support is LOUSY. I'm talking 10-year-old x86 commercial unix lousy. 2. You can't upgrade to it. Has to be a fresh install on a different partition from 32-bit Windows. 3. No more 16-bit Windows or 8-bit DOS programs. I didn't have a problem with this, but...

    iTunes

Well, technically those composers would probably be nationalists or impressionists or simply more evolved romantics. I like lots of classical music, even to the point of enjoying 12-tone, serialist and minimalist music, but the insistance on formal composition in baroque and classical styles is...

Torrents - do we even need TV any more?

Since I have a rare day at my desk I am going to start new topics on SF! Moving into an apartment has taught me something I did not know: I like a couple of TV shows enough that I want to watch them every week. It taught me something else: I hate Comcast with the kind of driving, permanent...

    iTunes

I heard something on the radio this morning and thought "Damn, I really want to get that on CD." That almost NEVER happens to me - maybe once in five years. In part because the finite amount of music that I listen to was mostly written 150 years ago and recorded 30 or 40 years ago, and in part...

Does anyone actually use roaming profiles?

There are VERY few situations where they are worthwhile. I've deployed them. I've supported them. I do not like them. Besides the corruption issue, roaming profiles are hell on network bandwidth. Positively lethal. There is nothing worse than an office full of people who can't do any work...

    Seen any good anime?

Well, OK, I agree with the reality TV bit. Television isn't an exactly a medium known for breeding good or even passable speculative fiction, but It's a sad commentary when the major networks in the US each have at least three televised versions of "F*ck your buddy" each and every day of the...

    Seen any good anime?

I'll not ever call it an art form. That would imply merit. Japanese-type Anime/Manga is like acid. It eats away at the things I actually enjoy, like science fiction, comic books, computer games and cartoons. It is in my estimation a black hole of culture.

    Seen any good anime?

I have a very, very strong dislike of anime, based on the behavior of those persons I have met who would call themselves fans of it. Someone might say that I shouldn't judge a leader by its followers but in this case my distaste can be matched to personal experience with the genre.

$850 seems entirely reasonable for that kind of density. I just made a single 13-drive machine (one OS drive) with a good old SC720 and a bunch of 7k250s. Damned thing weighs about 90lbs. Took 3 days to build the arrays and transfer the ~1.5TB worth of data to 'em. I'm doing it all with $50...

    LCD TVs

The big problems with LCD sets basically come down to limited size, poor off-axis viewing and limited brightness. If you're happy with the size and brightness of the display then there really aren't any other issues. Personally, I still prefer DLP/LCoS ("D-ILA") for my display. Both offer...

I have no problem with it not working while attached to a RAID card. It's a major issue, though, if it doesn't work with a completely standard onboard IDE controller for something as common as a KT600 - and losing support for *any* drive on a KT880, nforce3 and nforce4 means that a substantial...

I'm willing to put up with having to go into DOS to run a BIOS flash or a hardware diagnostic. While we're on the subject, Win32 has been around for 12 years, Linux has been "on the radar" of most hardware vendors for at least five. Why the HELL isn't there a standard library out there for...

Can you copy DVD's from one reader to another?

You get a disc that doesn't play, because you can't copy the part of the disc that contains the cryptographic key for the rest of the disc. Not every Video DVD is encrypted. A lot of documentaries aren't, and neither is porn. The standard forms of copy protection are standard Macrovision and...

    Bizarre Audio Product

As I recall it was one of TAB, F1, F2 or CTRL-S for the BIOS sequence. That model would take 64MB Fast Page or EDO non-parity SIMMs and I am pretty sure it topped out at support for 256MB of RAM. I dimly recall that the CPU was soldered to the board. If I'm wrong it probably has an Intel TX...
