    Asus direct RMA procedure

At the moment I have a glut of RMA-able Asus motherboards. Well, OK, four = glut, but they're all less than 18 months old on what I know to be 3 year warranty products. So I've been looking around the Asus Web site for a place where I can submit an RMA claim. And I can't find that place. At...

    9 SATA RAID cards reviewed

I have many positive things to say about those little Acard ATA to SCSI converters. But I don't like how much they cost. If they were $30 instead of $60, I would have them on all my PCs.

    9 SATA RAID cards reviewed

Interesting to note the very poor showing by 3ware. I note that they tested in Windows only. It's not a wholly realistic assumption to make about a given piece of "enterprise" hardware. Their valuation of promise hardware is in line with what I've seen and heard from others. And then there's...

    Sub-compact laptop recommendations

I've used a couple of the x-series models. I am big on the thin a light models myself but I did not like the passive display on the models I looked at. The keyboard only takes a couple minutes to get used to. In the end I went with the T-series instead. It weighs more but also has a longer...

Computer equipment recycling (within the USA)

As awful as it is, I have used the tried and true dumpster method for 99% of my "recycling" needs. At the point where the PC isn't worth putting a modem in, or isn't worth the space it occupies on the floor, I'm not willing to pay to dispose of it, and neither has any customer I've ever had. Try...

Building boxes/Toe in the water exercise

I'm about a step up from where you are talking about, Liam. I have parts on hand to cover building four to five computers on-hand at any one time. I stock more standard parts than anything - floppy drives, optical drives, PSUs, fans etc. Fewer CPUs or RAM, since prices on those items fluxuate a...

    SATA Hot-Plug Hard Drive Bays

3ware 8506-8. The "extra" two drives are essentially hot spares for the array (750GB RAID5) but right now I've got them plugged into the onboard ports.

    SATA Hot-Plug Hard Drive Bays

I finally got around to installing a couple of the Supermicro 5-in-3 SATA drive enclosures in one of my fileservers. I'm thrilled simply because having that density of drives (10 7k250s) on one of my machines means I can actually decommission two of my other servers.

    Samsung SP1614N Problem

Was it the first drive in the system? XP can only format a PATA drive to 128GB at install time. I usually format/prep on a different PC before I install, which allows XP to use the full capacity of the drive.

    100 TeraByte Tape Cartridges

Also, gotta say it, the last straw on the whole anime/manga issue for me - going from merely indifferent to actual distaste - was being trapped on a train coming out of Chicago with three absolutely RABID fans who, over a 90 minute period, went from talking about what I presume to be standard...

Fushigi, My two "large" local bookstores are Barnes and Noble and Borders. At my local Barnes and Noble, manga titles went from occupying 1 3' set of shelves to a whole 24' row. Graphic novels were completely removed (orders only), and the rest of the space came out of that reserved for Science...

I have less than zero interest in anime, except insofar as I wish it would get back under whatever rock in came out from under. I've seen Spirited Away. I've seen Akira. Both were about as appealing the thought of my grandmother's sex life. I've seen bits and pieces of other things (e.g. Cowboy...

    Windows XP CD

    100 TeraByte Tape Cartridges

The huge problem I have with Anime is that it is pushing many other forms of entertainment out of the market. That, and I've grown to dislike the attitude of a great many anime/manga fans toward other classically geeky preoccupations (science fiction/comics/D&D etc). If it were under its own...

People who want to store anime in any quantity shouldn't be allowed to breed. But, OK, I'm hovering at something just over 6TB in local storage at the moment. I rip 20 - 30 movies a week. For my efforts I can exhaust 500GB in a month without any difficulty at all. To me a single terabyte...

Gaming system: does hte CPU matter anymore?

My experience in the matter is not as extensive as some others, but in my opinion CPU speed is only relevant up to a point while gaming. If I play Doom 3 on an XP2800 or an Athlon64/3200, both with 1GB of RAM and both with a 9800 Pro, I really do have what I feel is an identical experience in...

    Needling the RIAA

4 '33" is actually very difficult to perform, since the musician must still keep a proper beat without any aural cues . It's also fascinating to hear, because absent the music from the stage, an audicence makes a surprising amount of noise, even a well-mannered crowd such that might attend a...
