Nforce 5 may have sound storm 2

Background: Right now I have two of these things I am not using, and a PVR-USB2. PVR250s are incompatible with an astonishing array of video applications. Which means you pretty much have to build a PC, install the PVR250 and its drivers before anything else, and then hope no other software you...

Nforce 5 may have sound storm 2

Seriously, the absolutel LAST thing you want is ANYTHING on a Hauppauge card. My most recent experiences with them show that it would be just as easy to get an ISA card working in a modern PC as a PVR250.

Nforce 5 may have sound storm 2

There was some discussion on slashdot of using a GPU as a 3D audio processor. Multichannel audio and 3D sound are apparently processor-intensive but of course the "big two" video hardware manufacturers have cards with cycles to spare. It would supremely annoy me if Soundstorm 2 came packaged...

    So Long Old Friend . . .

Also yesterday, the last Pentium II rolled off an Intel assembly line. Not as interesting or useful, but I had a "they still make Pentium 2s?" moment. I guess as long as embedded customers demanded it, they did.

News: IBM Selling Personal Computer Unit

It's very much like the deal between IBM and Hitachi. It's a joint venture with IBM as a minority partner, and license for Lenovo to use the names for some period of time. Yes, I'm worried about how that will change Thinkpad build quality but apparently IBM has been outsourcing the actual...

    Corporate Antivirus Solution of Choice?

Much as I hate Symantec, it's what I typically use. What I've found in a lot of cases is that if I use something different (recently I've tried Kapersky and Panda), some dumbass will either hound me about not having "brand name" AV software, or they'll just install Norton/Macafee anyway (thereby...

    So Long Old Friend . . .

IMO there's no good reason to upgrade from a 2200. 2800s aren't THAT much faster. Cascade it down to a second PC and wholesale-replace board and CPU. A couple weeks ago I had a 1.2GHz Duron installed in a machine that normally has an Athlon64/3000. With the same 1GB of RAM I barely noticed the...

    OQO PCs

As I understand it these things are unattainable to the general public right now, web store notwithstanding. The price seems reasonable for a palmtop on steroids, actuallly. But I'm not sure what good they are. What program are you going to run on one of those, with your limited screen...

Couple things: 1. The way the certification exam goals read, there is no need to interact with a GUI at all. None, zero, zip. So I'm setting up a linux box, and I'm just going to have them telnet into it (yes, ssh is better. No, I don't feel like installing an ssh client on my classroom PCs)...

Yeah, that one hurts. What a great line of CPUs. At least, with the socket outliving the CPU, we'll probably be able to get motherboards for some time to come.

    Death of a Deskstar

Share the wealth! :) Bad sectors are always a reason to replace a drive IMO. But if a drive is working, I tend to think it'll continue to work. I still have one of two 75GB 75GXPs in service at home (the other had a head crash, which I'd call "natural causes" given the weird symptoms other...

That doesn't make me wrong, time. :P I'd rather wait 3 extra seconds to get a page that's 50% loaded and completely accurate than get the first 10% of a page 3 seconds early with none of its elements in a fixed position.

How to save a flash file localy?

There's still the whole laundry list of things Firefox does better than Opera, from our last go-round on the topic. Speaking of good deals on 19" LCDs... I found this on Newegg today. Never heard of the brand but the specs look AWFULLY nice for a desktop monitor (700:1 contrast, 170 degree viewing angle, DVI support), and the price is nothing to complain about, either.

Every current-generation MMO needs 1GB RAM to be genuinely tolerable. UT2004, Farcry, Doom3 and HL2 are all VASTLY better if experienced on 1GB RAM. A lot of new games are listing 256MB as a minimum supported configuration. I'd say anyone who describes himself as a gamer is going to want the...
