    DVD Burner weirdness

One of my customers seems to be having weird issues with Nero 6.3.something... I've been dealing with this for about 6 months on and off. She is burning DVDs that seem to always error out at around 65% with High Focus Tracking Errors" when burning DVDs, either with DVD Shrink or with Nero...

    Wish me luck

I am not a religious person, Will. As such there are very few holidays that I celebrate. Thanksgiving is pretty much my "big" holiday. Usually I spend a bit of time contemplating my navel on the equinoxes and perhaps new years' day, but other than that I don't put a lot of value on special days...

Half Life 2 needs a switch kick in the ...

It's beautiful as far as the graphics go. I haven't played it at all except to see the graphics. I'm amazed at how beautiful human faces are. Whatever techniques were used to make heads were obviously the right ones. They are REAL looking, but they are a vastly better simulation than before.

Been spending a great deal of time with both of them lately. A couple nights a week, a whole day on a weekend. We meet and shop for groceries or books, or watch movies. Whatever. It adds up to me being on SF less than usual but at the same time it makes me feel much, much better about life. A...

Anyone want a men's XL Tshirt with a Lambda on it? I bought the DVD edition Sunday, because it came with HL1 source. I installed it and played it for a bit... maybe 10 minutes of just wandering around the game world (I didn't have a clear idea of what I was doing). If your eyes blur even a...

MAG 972PF-s 19" CRT any good?

jtr, seriously, buy a lease-returned 19" or 21". I bought a couple 2-year-old Viewsonic P-series (high-end) 19" CRTs for $60 apiece last week. They're gorgeous and other than the fact that one obviously had some stickers on it, perfect. I don't know where they're sold in your area, but locally...

Xeon solution vs. P4 for single processor?

Athlon MPs are a deprecated solution. Anything you can get at this point would be "kinda slow" to begin with. Dual Opterons, on the other hand... Sun makes a very nice dual opteron system that sells for shockingly small sums of money on ebay - $1500 - $2000 for dual FX53s with 2GB of RAM.

    Netzero (arg) and Firefox

If you don't plan to use IE at all, find iexplore.exe and change its NTFS execute permission to "deny" for the Everyone group. That will kill it, but system-level things that still need to use it, like MMCs and Automatic Systemp Update will still function.

P4s are purposefully crippled in that respect. Intel wants people with MP needs to purchase Xeons. There was something of a big deal made of this when the P4 was announced since at the time AMD was planning an MP processor line.

Just to clarify, Fushigi, USB disks on those netgear routers do have to be formatted with whatever format Netgear needs. I don't know what format that is (maybe FAT32 for all I know), but there's stuff in the documentation about needing to format the disk.

There's a hack to set up your own battle.net server, too. Xeon solution vs. P4 for single processor?

Briefly, I concur with Tannin regarding the XP2500 + VT600 combination. Buying an Intel-based solution right now, ESPECIALLY a massively overpriced Xeon, just seems silly to me.
