    Competition at its finest

I enjoy movies. As I said, I *can* get 24 in a week, if I'm sufficiently motivated. Usually it is just 8 or 16, plus maybe another 8 from wantedlist.com (for, uh, the other kind of movies I like). But for example I could grab a couple series' worth of Star Trek or the X Files in a week, and...

    Record Albums to CDs

Nero has a really nice audio editor builtin. Well, OK, not REALLY nice, but more than good enough to do the job. You'll need an amplifier for your turntable and a set of stereo RCA to mini-jack connectors. Total cost, even if you have to buy the record player, should be under $200.

    Competition at its finest

It can be 24 DVDs a week, if I try hard enough. I notify them of return the day they ship out and with the one day turnaround to the Chicago shipping center, I get movies three times a week.

    Bigger Drives When?

I wrote software to help me sort it. It's not really a big deal. Lots of people basically do the same thing with their email. Clocker, LM already said most of his drives are external firewire units.

    No SoundStorm in NForce 4

I've read that they've already split the engineering group that was responsible for soundstorm into different product groups. I don't think we'll see a future version of it. The good news is, there's enough outcry that perhaps someone will take up and champion the technology someplace else (a...

    Counter strike, anyone play anymore?

I did my Steam rant a few weeks ago. It's in some other thread here. Anyway, girls play games. My little LAN party in my office was 15% Estrogen-american. Y'know what? They were all cute, too. Anyway, I think the only part of this that's even remarkable is a mainstream acknowledgement of the...

    No SoundStorm in NForce 4

I'm sure it will, but it will be built on AC97 or some similarly crappy standard, rather than the drool-worthy Soundstorm codec. IIRC new intel southbridges do Pro Logic II, but IMO that's the least-pleasant of the fake-5.1 encoding methods. I don't have THAT much of an opinion on DD5.1 vs. DTS...

    KVM Problems

USB is REALLY poorly implemented for some things. There are a lot of USB devices that won't work unless they're attached directly to a root hub. Converter products (USB-Serial, USB-SCSI) have been hit or miss for me. I bet your mouse just isn't getting whatever the hell it needs to work from...

    No SoundStorm in NForce 4

Over a year ago nvidia made a press release stating their intention to offer a soundstorm based sound card And, for the record, the NV1 graphics product was integrated as a dual purpose video and sound card. nVidia HAS made sound chips before. Anyway, I'd commit vile and heinous crimes to have...

Old Backpack hard drive works on all but one computer

I had an old Microsolutions Parallel port CD-ROM and an old Pinnacle MP10 that also would not function properly with my collection of laptops. Eventually I found that most non-printer parallel devices required EPP communication, which was not supported on the oldest Dell and IBM notebooks I owned.

    No SoundStorm in NForce 4

Soundstorm is a DSP that converts PCM sources to Dolby Digital 5.1 audio. You've stated opposition to surround sound in the past, but here's the thing: It's wonderful for gaming, and as far as things go, the soundstorm process does a vastly better job than other 5.1 upconverting techniques I'm...

    Helpful hint from Merc

Yesterday I ran into a problem I found rather unusual. A few weeks ago I sold a Home Theater PC to a college student whom I thought was reasonably "on the ball" as far as computers went. HDD performance bottleknecks

Poor choice of pairings: PIO-mode devices on the same IDE channel as UDMA devices lead to having two PIO mode devices (lesson: don't put an LS-120 on the same cable with anything you actually want to use) Single-ended devices do the same thing to LVD SCSI. And while I'm at it improper...

    HDD performance bottleknecks

Data set is a big one. Most drives these days are optimized for high transfer rates and rather unappealing access times. If your data set consists of lots of little files (e.g. thumbnails of graphics files), your performance will generally be poor. Another might be bus contention, particularly...

I've had a lousy time getting anything to work over 8x. Normally I buy Verbatim DVD+Rs for my personal needs, but I've tried Memorex and generic "8x" discs. The Memorex discs my LiteOn drive wants to use at 2.4x (ouch), the generics (Prodisc?) underrun if I try 8x, but work OK at 4x. Guess it...

All the motherboards I'm familiar with that have 64-bit PCI slots are Serverworks or Intel server boards. I'm not aware of any that offer AGP *and* 64-bit PCI. Might be worthwhile to upgrade to PCI express peripherals if you really need that level of performance.

It does work. We do it in my office because comcast wants to charge us per port we use on the router/access device they provided. All the programs that make DVD, that I have found, are at least somewhat buggy. That said, these are my recommendations: Get a cheap Leadtek or other Conexant-based TV tuner/capture card ($30). Best movie you've seen

It's a tribute to the sci-fi serials of the 30s. If you've ever seen the old Flash Gordon reels, that's the feeling it's going for. Actually, it has that much in common with the Indiana Jones movies, which were essentially a better realization of 30s action serials. Anyway, there's a whole...
