    What the.......

The drive is more than full. The initial disk load was ~18GB (the Windows XP on my "game" computer, complete with some games and applications). I added 10GB of extra stuff (the AVIs) on the extra partition. The AVIs play, and I'm playing "Simpsons Hit and Run" from the original data set right now.

    What the.......

It appears to me that it works. I used a 20GB Barracuda III for a test drive. Ghosted an XP installation onto it. Loaded Ghost. Did an update to 7.793 (slightly newer than the article suggests). Followed the procedure: Booted off HDD-2 (on a GA7VAXP), loaded Ghost. Started a backup. Restarted...

No Schiller? No Goethe? I remember taking a German lit class in college. Reading in original German works like this: Before attempting to read a page of text for comprehension, scan the whole thing until you find the verb. The one verb. On the whole page. Then you highlight it with a marker...

    How long do CDRs last?

It does cost a small fortune, basically $1000 per TB right now (including a disk controller that can handle TBs of data). Fortunately, as storage density increases, it also becomes more affordable. Which is why I can double the storage I had 18 months ago, even with fewer PCs and fewer spindles.

    How long do CDRs last?

That was a gimmick about 15 years ago, I think. I do remember hearing about it. I don't know if it ever got to be more than a novelty, though. Kinda like those "100x" CD-ROM drives that were around for awhile that used some kind of caching system to go fast. Hm. Might be an interesting thread...

    Best movie you've seen

Somehow I can't bring myself to watch a movie about Lesbian serial killers. That stuff actually bothers me A LOT. I tried watching The Hours and had to shut it off, too, even though it's obviously a good movie (with a score that I really, really like).

    How long do CDRs last?

I use $.60 Princo -R cheapies for day-to-day burning and $2.20 Verbatim DataLifePlus +Rs for stuff I really want to keep, like the movies I steal from netflix or wantedlist. Coaster rates for +R discs seem to be lower on my selection of burners, and every +R I've seen burns at its rated speed...

    Wireless router/switch: Wireless not working

DLink's APs are lousy. I strongly dislike their lack of configurability. I have a DI624 in service where I'm working right now and I hate the damn thing. e.g.: Can't manually assign a DNS server address, hard-coded use of the 192.168.0 network, no support for RADIUS (Linksys supports RADIUS for...

    PC specs for 2004

One of the things that drove adoption of Windows 95 - besides long filename support - was the fact that Microsoft released Office 95 for 32-bit Windows only. Now, the situation in August of 1995 was somewhat different that it will be in ~18 months when the next version of Office is released...

    PC specs for 2004

Here's my take: 1. 1394 isn't common enough to worry about, and isn't worth the effort to seek out. I base this on the fact that firewire has been around for five years and probably 85% of PCs sold don't have it. USB2, on the other hand, went from nowwhere and nothing 18 months ago, to...

There aren't very many people here who can help you, unfortunately. You certainly SHOULD be able to get all of the above to function. A do-everything server is a single point of failure anyway, and should probably be avoided. I'd suggest off-loading a few of those server roles to another PC...

I don't download any music. I share a great deal of it, because the music that I enjoy has exactly zero exposure in the for-pay services, and likely never will.
