3000Mpbs = 375MB/s. Exactly how many drives can I attach to one of these? That will be really spiffy if each chip supports say, 8 drives. No? How about a new size limit? Still 48-bit? So what's the point?

I didn't realize they were still being made. In point of fact. I've already got a couple of them (both of which are being used). Live Drives are stupid. It's one thing to put a headphone connector and a line in on the front of a PC, maybe even a joystick port or TOSLink in, but why the other...

Flies actually do fly... (by Captain Obvious)

I remember listening to a couple of math majors in my CS classes complaining that "prove 2" was an obscenely difficult thing to do. It took Stephen Hawking to prove that time moves forward. Science doesn't work if everything is assumed. Sometimes the assumptions have to be proven, too.

I built a Linux box that runs a POS (point of sale) app and a bunch of serial terminals for a local chain of tire stores that's been running constantly for about four years now. I've heard, anecdotally, of Maxtor exchanging ball-bearing 740Xs for FDB; literally just because someone didn't like the pitch of the noise their drive was making. This was precrash at SR. Don't know if that's true, but it's a far cry from "won't replace because of bad sectors".

Wasn't me complaining about Maxtor, it was MARK. I've never had a Maxtor drive fail, and the only time I've used their warranty service was for a dead quantum AS. I had one arrive DOA, but that went back to the vendor. Maxtor drives are perfectly reliable as far as I'm concerned. I would...

Just put in for an I-Opener on ebay. $25 isn't bad for a 10" LCD, right? If I win I'll scarf up a ~4GB laptop disk, USB-ethernet device and some extra RAM, then see what I can do with it.

Sounds like a fun project to me! The one drawback to all of the above would be the lack of an ethernet port. Most of those appliances had a builtin modem, and I know USB-ethernet adapters are available, but it's too bad nobody put it in to begin with.

ISA and RS232 are among the very few bits of a "modern" computer that are really, deeply hackable. He wants to do 125 floppies, and that's cool, but it looks to me like he'd max out his USB1.1 interface at around 30 2x drives.
