    XP Modem weirdness

The subject was the PC listed in a previous thread (Pentium 233, 32MB RAM), running WinXP on a non-ACPI HAL. The subject is now an XP2200+ with 512MB on the ACPI HAL for XP. XP was upgraded stopping the install just after the first reboot and ghosting the FAT32 partition to an 80GB hard disk...

Caldera is a really, really evil company. Evil like Real. Evil like Microsoft. Evil Evil Evil. They deserve the crash and burn they'll be experiencing shortly. cheapbytes.com sells pressed Linux CDs for essentially cost of media. $2 copies of RedHat or Debian are pretty cool. Downloading...

    I received this hilarious spam

Where else am I going to get pictures of semi-clothed women and information about penis enlargement while I'm at work??? Actually, my office-mate and I have a regular contest over who gets the dumbest spam. It's kind of fun, in a "better than working" sort of way.

Look on Ebay. Those things cost like $25 used. That's where I got mine, anyway (then paid the new price for an extra receiver, sigh).

What is a good Basic Video Card

Good gods yes! Reseating cards, adding fans, swapping one card for one with the same nvidia chip. Changing drivers. Changing RAM. Changing power supplies. I actually have a few nvidia cards I haven't thrown away. All of them pulls from other PCs - so I really don't know if any of them work - but...

Blake, the goal of such a device would be to eliminate some of the many, many cables and expensive devices that are connected to an HTPC. Right now I can't even consider removing my HTPC from its receiver, even though all that receiver is, to my computer, is a way to hook up "real" speakers and...

What is a good Basic Video Card

I'm not talking about M64s, Vantas or GF2MXs. I'm talking about products across all those that nvidia has developed. What I've seen has ranged from Riva128 to GF4MX. I don't sit down thinking "Oh, gee, nvidia card, I'd better take that out." I've never done that, although I have been awfully...

    Mini-review: Sapphire Radeon 9000 VIVO

The problem James is referring to is something called "jitter", which is essentially related to the fact that any two AC electrical devices are on very slightly different electrical phases, creating VERY tiny errors in data transmitted on a digital cable. The anal-retentive dislike of digital...

What is a good Basic Video Card

I beg to differ. Looking back through my problem logs (I am a diarist by habit. Makes billing easier), I can see 41 times over a three year period where I replaced an nvidia card to solve lockup/ heat related issues or graphics anomalies, usually only after spending some period of time...

Sort of... USB is WAY too much of a load on a system CPU, and the only products I know of (Yamaha's, HK, Creative) are all USB, and don't have the functionality I'd like to see - eg video switching (especially switching to a VGA connector). If we're going to go outside the PC, those would be...

What is a good Basic Video Card

Tannin, do you just not like your customers? ATI is the solution, not the problem. The Radeon 7000 in particular is just about the most fuss-free card I've worked with in recent memory, with 2D quality that's far, far better than anything else I can buy for US$29.

The Xpert's 2D quality isn't very good. A Rage Pro is much better if you're going that low-end.

ATI 7000 would get my vote as well. It's a nice general purpose card. If I'm on a true budget mission, I'll look for S3 Savage4s, SiS730s or system pull Gx00 cards.

Mighta been. Have to admit that I don't particularly care. The capture software locked up XP every time I tried to install it (yes, I had the XP version of the software) - had to do comparison testing in 98, and of course the thing had the usual GF2 2D blurriness.
