I always use Via chipsets. I almost always use ATI cards. HOWEVER: my negative experiences are by and large from computers I did not build. I've seen Dells with crappy nvidia cards in them, HP machines, beigeboxes with PC Chips boards... I don't see any commonality there. If nothing else...
