Recommendations on good books to read

Do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson. Fantastic book. His other books are great, too, but Snow Crash is a really exceptional novel. It's the right time of year for HP Lovecraft, too. About 95% of what I read - and I read a lot - is either SF or...

Coug, if you want a copy shipped to my apartment, just PM me, and I'll make it happen. Ghost 2003 is quite an appealing product, since it's not the PE version (no serial number input) and integrates CD-R and USB disk support from DOS.

I have a bad time with FIC boards losing their battery early - sometimes only eight months or a year along. The version of Nero that ships with Lite-On 24x - 48x Lite-On burners works with 32x Sony burners. So I guess that's worth a try. It has a red label and a Nero logo. I must have 50 copies of it. The purple-label AOpen version does not work with Sony burners.

    Shuttle AK32L motherboard

Jetway = PC Chips' dumping ground. Worst of the worst. Bad enough that when I talk to old-hand techs at screwdriver shops, the very name causes either a laugh or a whimper. The whimper tells me the poor bastard had to service more than one or two of 'em. Shuttle's MVP3 (the HOT-591) was the...

Several years ago, I had an experience with Shuttle that makes Tannin's experience with ECS or Jetway or Alton or any of the other low-budget manufacturers look like a peaceful night's slumber. Tannins office on OS/2

I don't see anything at all wrong with using the stuff that works. That's why I use a text-based mail client, after all. OS/2 is a functional system. At least as functional as NT4, last I checked (and probably about the same level of driver support on today's hardware).

Two minutes, at an uppoer maximum. I'm thinking "fix that annoying spelling error", here. Honestly, I'm not totally comfortable with the idea at all, but ten minutes+ is almost certainly enough time to re-write a major post, which would fall into the "changing history" trap we've never wanted...

    I like polls

A printer with a builtin NIC, such as an HP4500N or my Phaser 850DP, can receive data at network speeds, which are at the very least faster than the 2MB/s of parallel or 1.5MB/s of USB. A print server such as blakerwry's doesn't really offer any performance benefit at all, since you still have...

I've never used an MSI-anything, but I've had some decidedly awful experiences with Abit and Asus. Gigabyte's been good. One DOA (an AMD 750-based board) out of about 60 purchases, which is pretty good. As I think back, I'm having a pretty hard time thinking of a brand I've had better luck...

I'd suggest waiting just a touch to see pricing on the 333MHz FSB Athlons. If nothing else you'll get a "free" price drop on your 2400-ish CPU but since an FSB improvement is usually worth a few steps in CPU power, it might be worthwhile to move up a bit more. For a video card, I just bought a...

So, I'm guessing you tested on single-CPU machines, then rolled it out to the big boxes, where it's crashed and burned? I always loved working on stuff like that. The pressure and release from resolving a deal-breaking problem is one of the things that makes working on computers so damn much fun.

10Gbit ethenet is designed for trunk lines and aggregation points, Doug. It'll get to the desktop eventually (my guess is probably four or five years from now), but I don't think it'll be widely deployed, deskside, unless someone can get it to work over copper wire (coughNotBloodyLikelycough).

Question about VPN & Dual Network Connections

Hey Kev, you know that if you look in the advanced properties for IP on 2000 or XP, you can assign multiple IPs to a single physical port, right? You set up IP for your VPN. You set up IP locally. You don't really need to establish routing unless you want to be able to hit your work machines...

Question about VPN & Dual Network Connections

ihsan, I suspect you'll see some serious performance loss in any case. Will the processor handling IPSec on, say, a 3Com NIC really do better than the processor handling parity calculations on a mid-range RAID controller? VPN = a lot of overhead. That's kind of a cool experiment to do in any case.
