What are my CPU upgrade options?

I just pulled a 6000+ from my home system, and it didn't seem to run that hot (no official tests were run). I have it sitting around if you are interested.

Only because I believe if you can't do it right, don't try. I know they won't get it right, so I just want them to leave damn well alone.

    Something Random

Macs are a horrible pain in the ass. They are simply a further extension of the Windows mindset. Everything that they think you want is in the front, and everything they don't think you need is buried a mile deep in some illogical hole.

    Firefox 3 beta

I guess I'm just not a power user. I never have FF crash or even slow down. I've been using it exclusively since 1.07 and it has always just worked.

    I'm mystified about geeks

Indeed. Especially geeks. California is without a doubt the place to be. Houston (where I am now), on the other hand, isn't. At "Bush International Airport" they actually make announcements that if you make rude comments to police they will arrest you. Who didn't figure that out on their own?

256MB? Not much. If it were at least a gig or two I would put photoshop scratch disks on it.

    I'm mystified about geeks

The trick is, they are all "official" geeks. I'm the only one without at least one PhD in the whole crowd. Does this make me less of a geek?

    I'm mystified about geeks

Everyone in my Tango group is a geek. The instructor is a laser geek, an assistant is a materials science geek, other regulars are AI geeks and robot geeks. But they are also all Tango geeks. We'll get together for a "practice" and never play any music at all, obsessing about a single...

    Speed of a 2.5" 7200 rpm drive

I've recently had great luck with SelfImage. Open-source, very simple, and it seems powerful (though I've only used it in drive-to-drive and drive-to-image modes).

Wow. I have mine set to max performance as well. Perhaps I should be looking at a firmware update?

Tony, Why aren't you planning on imaging your 80GB drive to a 160GB one? If the install is good, then don't bother changing it.

    Large RAID arrays

Yup. GPT is GUID partition table (IIRC). It works well with larger arrays. Mine uses it and it works really well. How are you liking the 9650SE-16ML? I love mine, it is a beast.

Linux-based firewall that supports multiple WANs

Unfortunately, my favorite Smoothwall doesn't support multiple internet connections. I need the following: 1. Support for multiple WANs (load balancing preferable to fail-over, Static and PPPoE) 2. Site-to-Site VPN tunnels 3. Content Filtering (Dans Guardian or similar) 4. Web interface Help?

    Where's everybody?

There is no server room, it's under a coffee table in the corridor next to the aquarium. It won't be there for long, the wiring guy is coming tomorrow, but that is where I was working. The whole time I was there the fan from the old server was driving me crazy, it was so loud. Finally the moment...

    Where's everybody?

Yes, in a row on a single project, without leaving their office. The total was 40 hours of billable time in under 48 total, but I took a nap in my car for a few hours.
  24. ddrueding

    Where's everybody?

Nope, just regular old hourly rate. But logging 30 hours in a day will do you good regardless. Furthermore, even on the back side of a 40-hour work stint I was able to sell myself to a new client. I've worked more in the last 3 days than I had in the last 3 months! Business is getting good again!

Pulling another unanticipated all-nighter. 1. Came in here this morning to troubleshoot a slow connection. 2. Notice that the workstations are full of spyware/viruses. 3. Notice that the server is the most hosed SBS2k3 install I've ever seen. 4. Notice that there are no backups. A. Build new...
