Really, really stupid error messages of our time

Mozilla's mail client is the weakest part of its feature set, in that it still has a few observable bugs. Every now and then I get an indexing error between my display and the stuff that's actually on my mail server, which requires me to go read email elsewhere until I get around to closing out...

Really, really stupid error messages of our time

My personal favorite is a Microsoft Visual Basic 6 (the IDE) Error: "This error should not have occurred." in a modal "OK" box. I tried to take a screenshot of it but when I clicked OK, the machine bluescreened.

Why is everyone up so early today?

So, I'm guessing you tested on single-CPU machines, then rolled it out to the big boxes, where it's crashed and burned? I always loved working on stuff like that. The pressure and release from resolving a deal-breaking problem is one of the things that makes working on computers so damn much fun.

Pentium 5? When and how will it be?

10Gbit ethenet is designed for trunk lines and aggregation points, Doug. It'll get to the desktop eventually (my guess is probably four or five years from now), but I don't think it'll be widely deployed, deskside, unless someone can get it to work over copper wire (coughNotBloodyLikelycough).

What I did on my holidays

slo, the DVDs I was watching have a trailer for the next movie in the "series", which will be called Naqoyqatsi - "Life as War". Pentium 5? When and how will it be?

Prof, if you'll go read the front page of arstechnica.com right away, you'll see that there's no talk of a Pentium5 until 2005, long enough for Pentium4s to hit 10GHz.

Is there a board out there somewhere that'll do a modern AMD (or P4 even) chip, something in the neighborhood of 1700+, and PC133 SDRAM? I've got a couple of old FIC AZ11EAs, but they're fuzzy over 1GHz. I only ask 'cause I'm looking at a pile of 256MB 168pin DIMMs on the table in front of me. :(

Question about VPN & Dual Network Connections

Hey Kev, you know that if you look in the advanced properties for IP on 2000 or XP, you can assign multiple IPs to a single physical port, right? You set up IP for your VPN. You set up IP locally. You don't really need to establish routing unless you want to be able to hit your work machines...

Question about VPN & Dual Network Connections

ihsan, I suspect you'll see some serious performance loss in any case. Will the processor handling IPSec on, say, a 3Com NIC really do better than the processor handling parity calculations on a mid-range RAID controller? VPN = a lot of overhead. That's kind of a cool experiment to do in any case.

Bluetooth is nowhere to be seen here in the states. Not surprising given microsoft's stance for support (XP doesn't even support it, officially). It's a low-bandwidth technology, anyway, and with the ranges and levels of interference i will be dealing with, not a solution in this instance.

Optionally, yes. A receiver with Dolby Pro Logic II will try really hard to turn any input it gets into 5.1, even if it's a plain old stereo input.
