    Best Mac Apps

The Mac is in fact running OS8.6. I installed Mozilla, and it didn't seem to work quite right. It tried to import a Netscape profile, and crashed. Then it would refuse to load at all....I'm not sure what to do with it. The latest problem is that I've been given an older HP inkjet printer...

    Best Mac Apps

as some of you know, I've recently inherited a Mac G3 at work and have been discouraged from installing Linux on it, or upgrading it's OS. So I'm suck with Mac OS8.something. Oh well. Q: what are the "best of breed" apps for older Macs. I mostly need a)a browser, b)an email client, and c)a...

    Help - I've inherited an Apple G3

Well, the Big Boss found out that I was thinking of putting a rogue OS on "his" machine (funny, I thought it actually belonged to someone else, but whatever) and discouraged me, since he once had a G3 that they attempted to upgrade to OS9 and failed. Oh well. This treat to be continued under...

    Opinions about OpenOffice 1.0.0?

ahh, and just in time too, since I'm going to be installing Linux (Mandrake most likely) on a Mac I inherited at work. Being able to write papers in a compatible format will be nice...if it works. Adcadet

More info: Running WindowsXP, and guess what else I remember doing today - installing the new Radeon drivers. I installed the new drivers, was told to reboot, but I choose not to as I had stuff to do. It was shortly thereafter that I noticed the problem, which has persisted after the reboot...

Video Erros on Radeon - help

Hey all, I'm running my nice new Radeon 8500 card in my Tyan Tiger MP, and today noticed that on my second monitor certain things will seem to flash a bit. It's very subtle, and stops when I drag the offending app (IE, Window's Exporer, etc) to my primary monitor. Let me see if I can explain...

    Help - I've inherited an Apple G3

After going from Win98 to Win2k to WinXP, I have developed a hatered for instability. Actually I guess this is why I don't like Macs very much - I had to use iMacs for some data analysis and literally couldn't go more than fifteen minutes without a crash.

    Help - I've inherited an Apple G3

As some of you know, I've started a new job recently and am much much happier (if you're curious, there's some info at www.tc.umn.edu/~calv0016/research). WD drive with 8MB cache - is the hype justified?

Tea - I realize that you aren't claiming that your tests are perfect, but I feel the need to point this out. Somehow I think your xcopy tests don't really do much in the way of a benchmark since they mainly test STR, for which the larger cache won't do a thing for. I suspect the same test...

    Drive for slackware

    Barebone

OK, basic system for office-type use/internet...this is what I'd recommend off the top of my head: 1. CPU - AMD Duron. These have an excellent Price/perofrmance ratio, and it looks like the current motherboards will probably support the future AMD CPUs. 2. Motherboard - I recently put...

    compiling own Linux programs?

I've asked this elsewhere, but never got a satisfactory response. Thus, I post it here, along wtih some background. My main PC died - I was out celebrating my birthday, and came home to a frozen WinXP. Rebooted, it gave me a hardware error and died. Then, it wouldn't post. It's being RMAed...

StarOffice will no longer be free.

ug! Bad news indeed. I totally agree with you, Coug, on pricing - if it's good, I'd pay $20 for it. If it's really good (as in an MS Office replacement) I might pay $50. But it would have to come pre-loaded on a nice 1200JB for me to pay $100 for it! Considering what 5.2 was like, it looks...

    Webpage titles

I just noticed something a little bit annoying. The HTML title for these pages usually starts with a double semi-colon followed by a title such as "post a new topic". While this is all fine and dandy, it would be nice for it to simply say "Storage Forum" so that when I have a million browser...

Any way to get out of MS Dynamic Disk?

Is there any way to back out of MS's Dynamic Disc in WinXP. Seems when I installed my replacement 60GXP I let MS make it a dynamic disk...but then those rogue OSes (*nix) can't see the drive. ATT ripoff

I'm not happy. ATT now charges $10 to "provision" new MAC addresses for cable modems. So for me to dump my old cable modem that I'm leasing from ATT and install one that I bought will cost me $10. They were probably loosing too many lease customers since modem prices are falling. Bastards.

I'm curious to see how the system feels after compiling the kernel and KDE stuff for your specific system. I've noticed that KDE2 seems slow, but I assumed it was because I was running on a P2-266 and Celeron 366 laptop - my fear is that it's KDE itself. Hopefully KDE3 will include a speed...
