    Paid antivirus

I think MSE is a lousy product. I'd only use it for someone whom I believe has zero likelihood of encountering a virus in the first place, lack of savvy for keeping Avast up to date and a relatively new computer. Likewise, I see absolutely no reason for anyone to install a third party firewall...

    Paid antivirus

Howell seems to like Vipre and NOD32 is a decent choice for being easy on system resources. I've been told that new versions of Norton AV are not as bad as older ones, but that's a claim I'm not even willing to investigate.

Does Norway have the Death Penalty?

Well, yes and no. Capital Punishment cases consume vast resources in the legal system. There are actually jurisdictions in the US that refuse to try them just because they're so expensive in terms of legal resources. The other thing is, death is permanent and irrevocable. Legal mistakes are...

    New BackBlaze Server build online

The one and only time I was angry enough to actually see red, I suspect I was on the ragged edge of passing out. I felt completely disembodied. I hurt a couple people. They both deserved it, but having that experience was enough for me to make a huge change in my personality.

Does Norway have the Death Penalty?

Civilized countries do not have a death penalty. Actually, as I recall from a documentary on the subject, penal systems in Scandinavian countries are progressive to an almost hyperbolic degree. But with any luck, the bomber will get put someplace unpleasant and never see daylight again.

I suspect you were part of the first group of SR regulars that was contacted and informed of the site. Stereodude was the first person I told once it was decided that we were open for business. Probably because his name was at the top of the list on SR's Computers Forum at that moment. I do...

My longstanding stance is that I will not purchase RAM that doesn't operate at JEDEC specified voltages. That RAM is defective, even if the manufacturer claims that it's +eleventybillion% faster than RAM that's actually in spec. Goddammitsofuckingmuch.

Cheapest PCI audio card with SPDIF

I'm usually able to find Via Envy cards on Ebay for $6 - $10. Usually they ship from Hong Kong but the only seller who has any up right now is in the UK. They're a big step up from the typical RealTek crap and they have both TOSLink and SPDIF connectors on them.

    Domain Controllers

Well there you go. I ran into that when I tried to maintain my classroom machines on a domain. They'd all lose their ability to talk to the DC after after the fourth time I restored their baseline image, or roughly eight weeks. I did some investigation and found out that there's a hard...

How old was the backup? If it was more than 60 days, there can be an issue with crypto the keys used by Windows Authentication going out of date and leaving the machines unable to talk to each other even though everything else is the same.

I can tell you that with my setup I absolutely give not a single crap about I/O performance. As long as it's fast enough to play video files without stuttering, I don't care. It's just kind of missing the point of having that collection of drives.

That does not surprise me even a tiny little bit, based on my experiences with Hitachi drives in RAID generally, and with recent Seagate 5k drives in various types of arrays. The Hitachi drives are also the cheapest 3TB drives available right now. So that's working for them, too.

Yeah. That was the deal. SR came back up and basically Eugene said that he was going to shut it down. There was an article on Slashdot.org about its closure, even. There were some emails spread around among about a dozen people and then Handruin set up SF. We had ideas that we would take the...

    Decent USB Flash Drives

The Gigabyte H61-USB3 is kind of a half-assed board. It performs well enough when paired with an i3, but I can tell that corners were cut to get to its price point. Even the packaging and manual are weak compared to the usual Gigabyte standards. And yes I stuck a PCI I/O card in it. It might...
