    Anyone Building AMD Systems?

I was given a budget of $850 each to assemble four "nice" workstations for one of my customers. I was thinking initially that I'd go with Sandy Bridge i7s, but I ran in to issues of motherboard availability. I took a look at what $300 will buy in an i7 CPU and I spec'd out a machine based on...

    Media Player Appliances

Hm. Some kind of low-end AM2+ machine + 2GB RAM + small local drive, say 250GB + modest case and PSU + DVD... I think I could do it for maybe $250, plus whatever the control scheme costs. Kick in another $30 for a low end Radeon if you're concerned about video decoding.

I don't know about love. I was just trying to make her happy. Usually if I give her something she's excited about she calls me to tell me so, and she didn't this time.

    question Larger TVs

I do my porcelain cruises at about 9:30AM. I like that I'm earning money while I do it. Especially since I'm doing a very high fiber diet these days.

    question Larger TVs

They're awesome. Seriously. Like a life-improving change. If I ever get another house I will have them. Also very nifty: Cottonelle Pre-moistened wipes. Call me a nut but I'm a fan of the clean ass.

If you'd really like to compare, it was -12F outside my apartment at 6AM this morning. With the wind chill it was -38F. It warmed up all the way to 7F at around 2PM.

How would one best go about tuning storage for Maximized Read \ Write rates?

I don't think you're going to get 200MB/sec over 1.5Gbps FC even under the ideal circumstances. In general, since the files you're dealing with are going to be large, you're probably best off using larger block and cluster sizes. I suspect that going bigger is going to cut down on the number of...

There's some things going on. OK, the big thing is Homegroup and/or Windows Search support. That's what enables Network libraries without causing a huge pile of suck.

    Paperless office stuff

No I am not, but making local copies of 12TB file shares doesn't strike me as a particularly good idea, either.

    Paperless office stuff

Library locations are indexed, so if you have stuff on them all the instant search crap in Win7 actually does something useful. You need 2008R2 or maybe WHS to make network shares available in libraries.

    Paperless office stuff

I got a lot of mileage out of NitroPDF for a lot of simple stuff like adding signatures to electronic documents. Good, descriptive file names and some kind of network storage that supports Windows 7 libraries and integrated search could go a long, long way.

Not sure. My building was sold to a magnet school at about this time last year. The school didn't do due diligence to find out that some of the space in the building was already occupied and leased. The school believes they have full use of the building. We've been paying rent to the school...

How would one best go about tuning storage for Maximized Read \ Write rates?

What kinds of data are being stored on the arrays? Video? .jpgs? Database stuff that's mostly held in RAM? The answer to your question is probably a solid "it depends" because your SAN performance in the end isn't going to be about bullshit synthetic benchmarks but live performance with real...

8x 1.5tb on LSI MegaRAID = very slow

That's an "entry level" RAID controller according to LSI's marketing materials. It's entirely possible that with eight drives in a RAID5 configuration, you're just swamping whatever onboard CPU that thing has. I'd suggest trying a softraid5, but it doesn't sound like you're on a platform that...

question Junking traditional TV for streaming only

I think there are good arguments to be made for using USENET, but I've found that it's easier to get obscure things through torrents, at least with a couple of the private trackers I'm using. It's kind of amusing me right now that the two largest adult-material torrent sites ceased operations a...

problem Computer crash when processing large amounts of data

Exactly. Everything I buy needs to be Crucial, Mushkin or Corsair and it all needs to conform to JEDEC spec before I'll buy it. I've been bitten a few times by RAM that wouldn't even work unless it was overvolted. I'm not touching that stuff again.

I have a ProMini. It's just OK. Range is good to maybe 12 feet, but if it disconnects, reconnection is as simple as bringing it in to range of its receiver and switching it off and on. problem Computer crash when processing large amounts of data

Sil3132: Can Silicon Image do anything right?

So to answer my own question, "can Silicon Image do anything right?", the answer is no, it can't. I switched to a Marvell 6Gbps controller and magically everything worked the first time I plugged it all in. Backup time dropped to a third of what it was on USB2.
