PC Gaming = World of Suck

Plus, then you'll have spent $400 just to play GT5 which if nothing else is probably a decent chunk of a mortgage payment.

    Quiet server

blakerwry, I configured a Dell server with all Dell parts, since that's the only way they're going to fully guarantee and support it. Their pricing for high capacity disk drives is particularly insane and appears to be the main cause of pricing disparity. Dell also isn't going to support the...

I don't like the interior layout of the P180-series cases. It turns the lower right-hand corner of the case into a total clusterfuck.

... and getting a Poweredge T110 to a even kinda-similar space in terms of options pushes the price up to $3000 before tax and shipping. My Newegg shopping cart is $2300 including shipping and my spare parts.

    Quiet server

I thought about just doing a Dell Twhatever. The extremely low-end Celeron "servers" are indeed fairly quiet but my proof of concept machine is, too, and it has a much more flexible configuration than Dell's.

Moving XP x64 to new RAID array on different SATA controller

This is true and I have done it many times in the long-distant past (NT4 needed that a lot), but I'm not exactly sure that doing so will address your issue, which is why I suggested the repair install in the first place. I know it will work and it's relatively expedient.

Maybe IE8 and some Windows Updates. Your apps will still be there.

    Quiet server

Here's what I'm dealing with: One of my coworkers has developed an application that relies on MSSQL + IIS (and it's an asp .net thing, so it's going to stay on IIS) that targets a specific market, which is health care related. The offices I've visited in attempting to sell this setup don't...

Moving XP x64 to new RAID array on different SATA controller

The fastest thing to do is probably to pull the JMicron array and do a repair install targeting the RAID1 of SSDs. I suspect that just fixmbr isn't going to cut it, though it's completely harmless to try.

    question RAID 1

There's a procedure to enable Intel RAID after the fact. It's complicated and involves screwing around in the registry. If you have Windows Server, if you create a SoftRAID 1 on another system, you can install to that.

    BF Deals?

Sane people do not attempt to go anywhere near retail establishments on the day after Thanksgiving (which was last month for Canada, anyway). Insane people probably aren't bothering with stores that have less surface area than a football field.

Yes and no. I'm going to use commodity parts, but in a perfect world I'd be looking for things like redundant PSUs so I can build a proper server system.

    I need a bed

Thank you for that, time. I'm looking for a queen size mattress. I don't like sleeping on a king. It's just too much bed for one person. Microsoft security vs. Avast?

I certainly could, but I don't want to move over all the crap that I host that isn't my personal stuff. I doubt anyone else would actually care as long as their four page wordpress things stayed online, but I don't really want to give people access to my stuff that's in my home.

    Cheap Color Laser Printer

Specs-wise that looks nice. I wish they'd give us a cost per page metric we could work from. I've stuck with Brother for "decent" printers. I kind of hate their web site, but their printers have been largely trouble-free. Nobody complains about color, which I mostly take to mean that no one...

Depending on the sound chip, that may or may not be accurate. Anything that follows the AC97 spec is sampling every sound to 48kHz before playback, which isn't exactly unmolested audio.

I'm a fan out Auzentech cards for the Dolby Digital encoding, which I find quite enjoyable for symphonic music, but absent that there really isn't much point. EAX got borked with the transition to Vista and I haven't seen a game with a Creative logo on it in years. Yes, I probably will buy...

System Restore in Vista and 7 works better than XP's version. And some people think TrueImage is buggy. I suspect those people are using the gimicky "Try it Out" feature or using the program incorrectly. TrueImage 2010 has a very different UI from previous versions. It kind of pisses me off...

SSDs - State of the Product?

I can understand that OCZ might not get tons of RMA requests for commodity RAM, but 80-odd days for a $700 drive? Granted that I wasn't calling to complain, but given that RMAs to Crucial and Intel are sent back overnight or second day shipping, it's a little hard to swallow.

    Win 7 network problem

Are you just talking about supernetting to a larger LAN, ddrueding? I'm not sure how Windows behaves in the context of stapling a couple /24s into a /23, though I suppose most of the historical arguments against letting an ethernet network get that big are invalidated by ubiquitous switching.
