Congrats on Fixture status. Finally. :P So a funny thing happened to me today. My $150/month Comcast "Business" service has been crappy for a long time, and after finding that a connection to my neighbor's wireless network resulted in generally faster data transfers, I called and complained. I...

drive in eSATA enclosure not recognized

nForce-based systems have some general weirdness with storage, as I recall. My standard practice when I was building nForce-based systems was to never load nVidia's storage drivers, and I recall that there were some data corruption issues with those boards as well. Not that saying so helps...

My least-favorite customer finally saw the light and agreed to move the Exchange server I'm maintaining (on a Comcast dynamic IP, so like half his emails don't go through. Which is my fault) for him alone to a single-user Google Apps Premier domain. I feel oddly buoyant.

When USB 2.0 was released, it was ultimately revealed that there were multiple specifications that the USB people wanted to call USB and USB Hi-speed. Any number of products shipped with "USB 2.0" support that did not offer USB Hi-speed, which was touted as the principle advantage of having...

    1. Would not bother unless I saw a commit charge over 2GB on a regular basis. 2. Onboard video is generally fine. A gamer might think otherwise, but chances are very low that your dad would run a fullscreen 3d app if he spends all his time in a web browser now. 3. USB 3.0 is kind of a joke...

    Home ESXi

It's kind of amusing to me that if I configure that T100 with a reasonable selection of hardware (2.6GHz Xeon, 8GB RAM, 2x250GB drives, SBS2008 license) I wind up about $1200 cheaper than if I set up the same machine on a rackmounted platform. Yes I know it's a different series of Xeon. It's...

I'd probably go with Intel just because I like vanilla stability. I'd look at something like a G31 or G41-based board from Intel or Gigabyte, with an E5300 CPU, 2GB DDR2 RAM (RAM is expensive right now and DDR3 isn't giving any benefit to a $500 computer), a pair of 500GB drives (Samsung >...

ESXi is funny about NICs. I know there's one or two models of 100Mbit Realtek NIC that it absolutely won't work with, which is obnoxious because those models amount to 84% of my classroom computers.

    When to Build New System

I guess to redirect back to LM's question, I'd build a system when I need one and follow the usual generic advice of buying most of my parts one or two steps down from whatever the best thing I could buy on that particular day, because that's usually the sweet spot for pricing. I wouldn't wait...

ATI CCC Advanced Mode on Server 2008 R2 x64

No, they're stable and low. My 4870x2 is and always has been audible, but not intolerably so. It's a very low hum at idle. It does get loud when I'm gaming but of course at that point I'm gaming and there's enough noise from whatever game to cover it up. Maybe it stays loud for five or ten...

CCC still fucks up if I load it on this machine, so it isn't loaded. I have the ATI display driver, but not CCC. So it's on whatever the hell speed the fan defaults to. And yeah, I got in and blew the fan out this morning the moment I realized I could hear the damned thing.
