Not so much. You can do a repair install, or make the hardware switch halfway through an upgrade install, and it'll be OK.

    More Vista nonsense

Actually, hell is a Vista Premium laptop with 384MB RAM, a 4200rpm hard disk, Norton Internet Security Suite, WordPerfect and all of its font packages and Webroot Spysweeper installed. I worked on one last week where it took fully 45 minutes to install all 500MB of "drivers" that came with...

Dell Dual quad core for $748

I think they're just looking at the fact that HP is bigger right now, Apple earns vastly more on a per unit basis, and the edicts are coming down from on high for their engineers to find ways to save money. I do not think they're giving consideration to the long term in the slightest.

A couple models, yes. It's not a good fit, really, but I think Dell has given up on quality in the name of market share.

Dell Dual quad core for $748

Remember that one of the things that makes a C2Q CPU so appealing is the sickening capacity to overclock. FBDIMMs cost pretty much double what DDR2 does and tops out with support for a 667MHz FSB. Also, Xeon has never been what you'd call an overclock-friendly CPU; anyone who makes a "server"...

    UBUNTU AND DVD/CD SOFTWARE VS....?

AnyDVD does several things that make it worth the cash (or the effort to continuously pirate, whichever): They've been very good about updating to handle those broken DVDs and for that matter CDs, and also to handle HD Disc content keys, and also AnyDVD strips out HDCP requirements, which makes...

    UBUNTU AND DVD/CD SOFTWARE VS....?

I generally find it easier to rip DVDs under Windows and/or WINE. ARCCOS copy protection is a stopping point for a lot of new releases (ARCCOS is also updated continuously, so something that can handle the ARCCOS of two years ago, like Ripit4Me isn't going to do much good vs. the ARCCOS of last...

Dell Dual quad core for $748

I've seen a rather steep decline in the overall quality of Dell-badged hardware within the last year or so. Lots of blown power supplies and bad motherboards. It's not that hard to make a quality desktop or low end server, and they aren't doing it. My feeling is that Dell is probably cutting...

    More Vista nonsense

Actually, the article says that it happens under a variety of circumstances, but most easily while Kapersky products are running. They're blaming a kernel memory leak. Some guy in the comments suggests it's a leak in Explorer and not the kernel, but frankly that's just as bad.

    Cell Phones and Serice Providers

I considered the Q when I bought my 6800, but there were a couple down sides to that phone. One is the lack of integrated 802.11 - a feature I really appreciate, and the other is the compromise between the screen size and the keyboard. As much as I don't like iPods, the one positive thing to...

Why do you need audio in the restroom? A few easy answers: Get a boombox with detachable speakers that use real speaker wire. Run the speakers to strategic places in the ceiling. Get a pair of 900MHz wireless speakers. Put them in the ceiling. Get a pair of 802.11 speakers. Put them in the...

I use an HTC 6800 with Sprint. $300 phone. It's not great as a phone - I don't like losing the hard buttons because I memorize phone numbers and don't bother with the address book. I use the thing as a WiFi signal detector and for Email as much or more than the phone. It has 1Mbit internet...

UT3 Demo: Very very pretty. Runs very well on my gaming PC. Level load times seem long, and the menu system is all console-y and crappy. The gameplay is just exactly as fun as the previous two games in the series. I've only done Deathmatches against bots so far, but they are a blast.

Lightweight Anti-virus for Windows on Business Network

AVG (not-free) is still not a bad choice, if lightweight is part of your requirement. NOD32 is probably the best choice, though, given the cost (same as AVG) and overall effect...
