    Seagate 500GB SATA OEM $150 USD + $6 S&H

So would I. I'd also like to see a 16-port SATA controller that costs around $250 and goes in one of those worthless 1xPCIe slots that seem to be taking up space on my motherboards these days. It can just be a RAID1, 0, 10 or JBOD controller. That's fine. And while I'm living in fantasyland...

    Mormons Knocking at Your Door?

When I lived in Purdue's dormitories, I frequently had to deal with Evangelical Assholes. I made it a habit to do the most offensive things I possibly could to them - something that usually involved removing my pants. Sometimes I'd also try giving competing organizations other literature, e.g...

    Laptop graphics

The Core2 will be faster and better battery life... I suspect the ATI will be better, but only modestly. The better direct match for a FireGL5250/x1700 is almost certainly a 7600. In any case, graphics will be good enough for last year's DX9 stuff.

    Something Random

Eventually my ex's partner came and found them for me. They were behind my home theater setup. Which means they went from my bedroom, down a hallway, into my dining room and then into my living room. The whole time, I was just searching my bedroom, but since I had no glasses at all, I was...

    Not impressed with Mark Shuttleworth

Shuttleworth has probably done more for Linux than anyone else in the last two years. While I'm not personally fond of Ubuntu, that organization has pushed Debian forward and brought it to something nearly mainstream. SuSE made a deal with the devil. An incestuous one, given the dealings...

    High Gain WiFi antennas?!?!?

I've set up those Hawking antennas several times. I think they work well enough to increase range. My solution for crowded 2.4GHz is to go to 802.11a. Failing that, you could get Pre-N equipment and blow away whomever is interfering with you.

My parents' receiver crapped out today while we were in the middle of a post-feast Battlestar Galactica marathon. It was a S*ny, so I am in no way surprised. Best 20" LCD display

I've used Scepter 19" displays many times and don't have anything bad to say about them. They're a no-name brand with decent specs. On the other hand, I bought them when they were quite a bit cheaper than name brand displays. Now that they aren't that much cheaper, I think I'd rather have the...

It crashed after about an hour of work, though I have to admit I wasn't paying too much attention to it by...

Suggestions on a simple computer backup plan?

Acronis can be had for $25. Buy a 160GB drive for maybe $70. Buy a USB external case for $20. That is reasonable and it is EASY to set up. Make one full system backup and do daily incremental backups of the documents and settings folder, less some Temporary Internet Files/FF cache-type...
