Y'all Down Under, watch out for the redbacks!

Though I have to give Buck the free shot he deserves...where I am right now (Eugene, OR), it just hit the highest temp that it's been the last 2 weeks. 11C it's regularly below freezing by 6PM and until about 9AM. Yuck. Though my GF has already been accepted @ Madison, Chicago, and UCSF...next...

    Buying some iPod shuffles...

No doubt. But lugging the receiver and a generator on a run or an airplane seems like more of a workout than I had in mind. One of the reasons I'm looking into this is to supplement my laptop battery on trips. If I'm not running my laptop at times where I JUST want to listen to music, than that...

Integrating fax support into Outlook 2003/Exchange

That's what my client wants to do. Basically be able to write an e-mail, and instead of having an e-mail address in the line, have a fax number. Then have a public folder that's the inbox. Any suggestions?

    My new system...

Yeah, I suppose I should put that into my requirements. I only want one drive, and it needs to be able to burn dual-layer DVDs, and I want the fastest one of those I can find. Noise for the optical isn't an issue, I find 10 minutes of noise a worthwhile cost of having a movie online.

    My new system...

Well right now my Optical is a Sony DRU-700A with the latest firmware. It works pretty well, and matches my current case (Antec P-160). As it will be well hidden in my current case, I could keep it. The one thing I want more than anything out of my optical drive is fast DVD rips using DVD...

Thanks for the feedback. The Samsung was selected from the random list on Newegg's cover 'cause it was under $50 and I've had good experiences with other Samsung products (LCD, HDD, RAM, etc). The only thing I really plan on doing with it is ripping video DVDs. Any suggestions?

Linksys NAS Device is really slow...

Looks cool, but I specifically don't want another computer. I really like the simplicity of having some storage on the network (don't need permissions of any kind) that consumes little power beyond the drives themselves.

    Buying some iPod shuffles...

My logic is this: I just built some playlists that I would like to have. They all fit with 20% to spare. Also, since they don't have screens, much over a hundred songs would become unmanageable.

Nah, my system is on all the time. If this product or something else cheap doesn't work, I'll likely just buy longer USB cables and connect the drives directly to my machine and share them from there. Nah, screw it...I'll build a new machine. New thread forthcoming...

I don't have any other USB drives to try, but I do need to buy another one anyway (IF the next NAS device I get uses USB as well). I might end up going in that direction... Latest Firmware (Jan 15, 2005) is in place.

I have a Linksys NSLU2 USB->NAS device and it blows. I have a WD2500JB in a USB 2.0 enclosure and the best this thing can do is 500kb/s. Any reccomendations for a similar product at a reasonable price? I need support for at least 2 drives (4 preferred). If it supports SATA drives internally...

As you guys may know, I travel quite a bit. I have a fairly substantial MP3 collection and am interested in having it available while I'm travelling. Death I'm not so worried about, the odds are low and cures common. Severe inconvinence, however, I'm strongly disinclined to tolerate. Time, Tannin, and Jake, what would you say your odds of being severely inconvinenced (bitten or otherwise molested) by one of these suckers in a given year be?

    Cheap gaming machine for school?

 Sorry Greg, but I unloaded all of my gear just before christmas. I was moving, so many of my friends and relatives got slightly-used computer components as needed and quite cheap. Depending on your requirements, an AXP gaming box with a 9600XT should be had for under $500, an A64 with...

    Backup solution -- dumb idea?

I just took one of my growing clients to something similar. They now have a dedicated backup server. HAL in the navy

Expecting it to is too much. This too was blatant human error. Expecting a computer to protect against even smaller degrees of human error is too much. In this case, what if there wasn't a computer running this sensor, what if it was a human? They'd still recieve conflicting information from...

So long as they're both PATA drives I don't forsee any massive issues. IIRC there's a switch that removes all devices and re-installs them on reboot. You'll probably want to to this right before the swap.

    Yay! I installed Fedora...now what?

The problem I'm having with the NIC is 100% VirtualPCs fault. It's not passing the MAC address to the virtual machine. Not a problem. Still playing. Anyone have a link to a list of useful console commands?
