    PCI-X and PCI-E: Why?

Sounds good to me. IIRC, a 1x card can run in any slot, but I thought a 16x card could run in a 8x slot @ 8x speeds?

    PCI-X and PCI-E: Why?

So PCI-X is a brute-force kludge that is here to deal with excess demand on current technology, while PCI-E is a new architecture that promises higher speeds at lower costs (eventually). Do I have it right? Will servers eventually go PCI-E?

    PCI-X and PCI-E: Why?

Why do we have these two formats? Why are servers coming out with PCI-X slots while desktop video cards are PCI-E? Which is technically superior and which is likely to succeed?

    Athlon 64 3200+ 939?

IRC, those are 1x PCI-E slots. Wasnt the spec to include different sized slots for the different speed ranges? The one that replaces AGP is clearly a 16x slot.

    O/C ing on S754--mobo recommendation

Just for the record, the backplate on the MSI K8N boards isn't glued on. It does, however have a layer of very "spongy" non-conductive pad that tends to vacum-seal to the board. All you have to do is start pushing one of the mount points through the board and be patient. There is no residue and...

If you don't already owna mower, it's a fine time to opt into a lawn care service. Especially if you live in an area where a mower won't be used 12 months a year, the mower would take a long time to pay for itself.

They show a P4 being cooled by a single heatpipe connected to a steel case :o How would that work? The other designs I've seen involved at least 5 leading to massive aluminium heatsinks.

Boxes of parts and the elusive "known good"

    Athlon 64 3200+ 939?

    Who drops $800 on a gaming CPU anyway? I haven't spent more than $300 on a CPU in the last 6 months. For just under $300 you can currently get: A64 3400+ (2.2Ghz, 1MB) Pentium M 735 (1.7Ghz, 2MB) Opteron 146 (2Ghz, 1MB) Xeon (2.8Ghz, 512KB) P4 550 (3.4Ghz, 1MB) I can think of a dozen other...

    Best movie you've seen

I saw an interesting film the other day. Fall (1997) was Written, Directed, and Produced by Eric Schaeffer. He was also the star of the film, with him in a role he was very familiar with (he drive a cab for 9 years). There's a very real feel to the film; despite it's slightly whimsical premise...

    Budget Gaming Card Conundrum

Does the albatron not like any 9600s? Or just the Pro version? The 9600Pro Ultimate Edition is my favorite card in this segment, but the plain 9600 is fanless, incredibly cool running and does alright in games as well.

It looks like that person had issues with the Zalman because it wasn't installed correctly (wasn't making contact with the drive). Remote desktop connection basic questions

It's been a while since I've used 2000 server, but I think I remember a bit. I assume you are only having one user connect at a time? If so, you need to install terminal services in "remote administration" mode, that way you don't need a licencing server.
