Yup, credit goes to Merc. As soon as he gave the sugestion, I had a feeling he was right. Just hadn't had time to work on it until earlier. Now I have a home-brewed "server" in one of those ghetto 20$ beige towers....with 7 hard drives in it! :o The thing is sitting next to me cooling off...

Yup. I can only guess that the foil shield is unintentionally grounded to either the board or one of the wires somewhere...I'll look into it more when I have more time. Right now I have 3 servers down in 3 different cities....great

    BIOS Issues...

Got it...I almost feel stupid saying what it was... I used an Antec Cobra rounded IDE cable for my DRU-700A. This is a really neat shielded cable that is thinner and more flexible than most. It also comes with a grounding strap on the end. Connecting this strap is the culprit.

That's from the BIOS before it choked (completely at idle). When doing basig tasks it runs @ 800Mhz @ 0.9v. I'm really impressed with the number of things I can do quickly without it speeding up. Making any changes to the BIOS causes the error in the OP.

Which it is under certain circumstances. The ability to "pour" the entire transfer at once to a 3rd location, then "pour" the data back @ STR speeds versus only being able to pour as much as the hard drive cache allows before having to stop, seek, read, seek again, and continue. I mught even...

Copying from one location to another

That wouldn't really work, as the drive wouldn't know if sector y oon drive b was available. If the OS provided that information as part of the command I can see it working; but on more fragmented drives the commands might take longer than the data itself. Further, isn't the copying process...

Better motherboards also have "Clear CMOS" jumpers, but pulling the battery does the same thing. Checking to see if the motherboard is grounded is a great idea. I'll check that out when I get back to the house. I'm not seeing how a second BIOS could prevent this kind of thing more than once...

    nforce2 Audio strangeness

None of my nForce-based systems have had this issue either; but I've phased out most of them already so I can't say for sure. I also only use the analog outs, so if it only affects the digital out I wouldn't know. All the boards are ASUS A7N8X-whatever (E/X/Deluxe/etc)

So in my new favorite PC (a quiet one for my bedroom) I currently have a 1st gen WD360GD "Raptor" hard drive. SD or AXDA?

According to a thread linked to by a member here, the only heatsink able to manage the lower height of the mobile CPUs (no heat spreader) is the Thermaltake SLK-948U. I've had really good experiences with them in conjunction with Panaflo "L" fans on the 92mm size @ 5v. It still runs at under 100F.
