Well I just picked up another case of Alice WHite Chardonnay. Certainly not beer, but very nice nonetheless. And with a touch of Aussie flavor (though it is imported and bottled 40 miles from here).

Why do people love the Barracuda ATA drives?

you seem to have hit the nail on the head. It is very quiet, and is 10-15% slower than louder drives. All depends on your priorities I guess. Me? I use raptors :mrgrn:

The last time I was there, I spent about a week on each side, a different B'n'B' each time. I hear you can no longer walk out to the lava flow. I got within about 3-4' last time before my boots melted. Those are a cool souvenier.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

An excellent question, and one I didn't bother to answer. Shortly after working though the basics here, I realized the PC was still under warranty. F*** it, it's their problem. Called Tech suport, they quickly (within 2 hours) authorized a service visit to a local gateway country store for repairs.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

This is the other interesting part, disk management shows the correct volume appearing and dissapearing as the disk is inserted and removed, so the hardware definatly knows what's going on.

I agree, it should display something, but what is showed is exactly what is shown. No CD burning software is or has ever been installed on the PC.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

removing the drives from the machine caused an error message during post "no cd-rom drive found" that has never been seen before. It also removed the drives from the device manager and from browsing. Reconnecting the drives did away with the error and restored the drives to the same state as...

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

nope, no number of reboots fixes the issue. I'm pouring through pages of knowledgebase articles, but no love yet.... I doubt it is a hardware issue as both drives exhibit the exact same behavior.

    Weird CD-ROM behavior

When a cd is inserted into either the cd-rw or dvd-rom of this machine, no files are displayed in explorer. When you select an empty drive, it prompts you to insert a disc (proper behavior) But if there is a disk in the drive, there is no prompt, just no files. In device manager the drives...

Yes, Coke has lots of calories and tons of sugar. But it is also an appetite suppressant ;) And yes, it will dehydrate you (caffine and sugar both have that effect) so if you drink the volume that I do without drinking water (a bottle for every can) you will wake up with a hangover. I'm 6'2"...

    Building a dirt-cheap HTPC....

Thanks for the replies so far, this was what I was worried about. My concern lies in the fact that I have to keep this thing exceptionally cheap while making it stable and versitile enough to be running his primary TV. I don't need a cable tuner, as input will be from satellite or VCR. This...
