OK, USB 3 is here and my PC is equipped. Anybody have an external enclosure that doesn't suck? I'd love something with USB 3, USB 2, eSATA, Firewire, gigabit ethernet, and Wifi-N, but I'd settle for just decent USB2/3.
With Datram's RAMDisk I can tell it to load an image from my mechanical HD when I start it up, and to save it to the mechanical HD when I turn it off. It will even save an image every X seconds. My machine has 16 GB of RAM, and I've got it setup now to create a 6 GB RAMDisk that has a Linux Mint...
Anybody have experience with creating and using RAM disks? I recently found Dataram's ramdisk (free for <=4 GB) (link: http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk). Has a nice GUI, seems to work reasonably well. I've been playing around with creating Linux virtual machines...
An Intel 320, 120 GB for $230. Not exactly cheap, but something I'm eyeing since my 80 GB X25-MG2 is starting to feel small.

Over the weekend I successfully re-installed my old Sound Card. I guess uninstalling the software and re-installing it did the trick.
I still wonder why my Raptor isn't usable on the Marvel controller, though. Perhaps a driver re-install would do the trick? Although now I've got the ports...
Indeed, posted in the wrong thread. My bad.
Was joking about the no-reboot-CPU-swap thing. Although, I seem to recall a long while ago that some very large multi-CPU system was designed to allow different CPUs to be shut down and swapped.
I did simply swap everything. Unfortunately, I've...
wow, just found that in the box they included an HS-101 notebook headset along with a PS on the bottom of the letter explaining that they hope I accept them as a token of appreciation. Not sure if it's crap or not, but I appreciate the gesture.
Just got my replacement board from Asus today, along with an email and FedEx instructions. It only took them 5-6 days to get me the board after faxing in the form for the credit card hold. Not bad.
I think I may have just been bitten by the bug. Came home from work this morning, computer was frozen. This rarely happens, but as mentioned elsewhere, I've been playing with some new programs (Dexpot). Computer would take forever in the BIOS to get to my boot menu, and Windows wouldn't boot...
Interesting.
I can see why some data would need to be stored in an unalterable format for accountability purposes, but would that data really be sensitive and need to be kept secret? Would terrorists care when a reactor was shut down for maintenance, for example. I guess if the maintenance...
I run two monitors, and Dexpot works fine.
I don't actually run that many applications, but it's nice running each virtual machine in a maximized window on its own desktop. Dexpot then lets me easily cycle through desktops.
I think I finally figured out how to make a dent in my 16 GB of RAM. Dexpot (http://www.dexpot.de/index.php?lang=en), a way to allow multiple desktops in Windows 7 to allow me to more easily run multiple virtual machines through Oracle's Virtual Box (which I prefer over VMPlayer as it seems to...
I bit on the 15% off sale Newegg had and am now up to 16 GB (4x4). Other than running multiple VMs, I'm having some trouble finding a use for all this RAM.
Weird. Did you disable Speed Step or something?
I recently found that my board has some difficulty with 4x4GHz sticks in place. Getting them to work initially required some work, and now if I reboot I'm fine, but if I power off/on I have to hit the "memOK!" button and then reset them to 1600 MHz.
In one of the SB threads somebody asked about Windows User Experience scores. Here's mine:
2600k @ 100 MHz *48 (4.8 GHz), 16 GB RAM at 1600 MHz CAS9, processor is 7.7, RAM is 7.9.
Noted. Which is one of the reasons my PC boots up at what the motherboard thought it should run at - 103x44 with the default Vcore (1.2V, I think). If I don't feel the need, I don't load the more aggressive settings.
But at the same time, what are the odds that I will outgrow this CPU before...
No, no, that's really not true. You see, most graphics card manufacturers tend to stick with the same type of packaging. So I can expect my next Asus card (retail) to come with another nice box.
I still don't fully understand Vcore, nor how the Turbo Frequency vs baseclock fits together when OC'd. I think my 2600k gets an additional boost of up to 400 MHz above my baseclock (4.8 GHz when OC'd) when conditions allow.
I used to use Prime95, but when I built my HTPC (http://www.storageforum.net/forum/showthread.php?t=8201&page=2&highlight=HTPC) I saw that Intel's Burn Test would consistently produce higher temps. Whether this actually translates into a better test, I don't know.
Yeah, with each change I run Intel's Burn Test (runs Linpack) at "standard" and then when I think I've reached the limit I re-run using the "high" setting. I think it makes a difference - my 100x48 seemed fine on "standard" at a Vcore of 1.25V but not when tested at "high", hence I bumped up to...
I disabled spread spectrum (of the CPU and VRM, although I should probably turn the spread spectrum of the VRM back on) and turned TPU and EPU off. I did this initially because my board had trouble booting, and haven't bothered to turn on TPU or EPU yet.
I found that if I leave the baseclock at...
A few months ago I bought a Canon Vixia HF M300. I'm very happy with it. Unfortunately, the included software isn't the most user friendly, and after building my new PC the camera thought that none of the videos that I left on the internal memory card were on my PC and it started transfering far...
Found the problem - Google Desktop.
This is slick! I have two hot swap bays, and in them I have a 2 TB Hitachi and an old 500 GB 7200.10. I have two drive bay covers for my case (from front panel slots used by an optical drive and a fan controller). So I can run a backup to the drives, take...
I don't see a "quick removal" option listed, although I can disable caching. And HotSwap! reports that it can't stop the disk in question because another program is still accessing it. It does this when I try to ejection other disks as well, as does the default Windows eject option. Anybody know...
Allow me to offer some thoughts, if I may.
I've noted that Gigabyte boards have generally been really solid recently, so I was expecting to get a Gigabyte board for my Sandy build. Unfortunately, it looks like people don't like Gigabyte's boards:
"The Gigabyte P67A-UD4 is a very good...
Hey Guys,
How can I tell if my old Barracuda 7200.10 (500 GB) supports hot swapping? I've enabled hot swapping on all SATA ports in my BIOS, but is there anything else I need to do? I'm a little hesitant to just yank a spinning drive from a running system.
Thanks,
Adcadet
Wow, that was easy. I downloaded VM's VMWare Player (free), told it where my .iso was, and it installed it (it is apparently pre-configured for certain OS's). Playing with Linux has never been so easy.
Native OS, a virtual Linux, and my VPN/remote desktop....where will it all end? I suddenly...
Hey Gang,
I'm interested in playing with Linux some more, but for a few reasons would prefer to do it from within Windows via VM. Does anybody know a good, recent guide to help get me going? Most of what I can find is from 2007.
Thanks,
Adcadet
The lowest-end Sandy Bridge with the better video that I've heard of is the 2500k, which goes for $225. The cheapest H67 boards (H67 allows you to use the on-die graphics stuff, P67 does not) currently available start for ~$75 and go up from there. Not sure that's a bargain for a HTPC compared...
I ended up going with a Brother multifunction and have been happy with it. We use it to scan, fax, and print a few times per week, and usually just a few pages.
The smallish one came with the retail (box) processor. It reminds me a lot of what came with my Core 2 Duo (Conroe) chip about 4 years ago. I'm using a Coolermaster 212 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065&Tpk=coolermaster%20212).
My system is now pretty well up and running as I want it. So far, so good. This board makes overclocking ridiculously easy. My system runs very well with a Vcore of 1.24 and a 40x muliplier (4.12 GHz, stock is 3.4 GHz). Overall I'm pretty happy.
I now have my i7 2600k system up and running. There's definitely some funkiness going on with the BIOS (video card error when I power up all my hard drives), but I just don't have time to track it down now.
Hey Guys,
Does anybody have an external enclosure for a 3.5" drive (or multiple) that they like? I'm thinking that it would be convenient to turn one of my older hard drives into an external drive connectible by USB3 (+/- eSATA). It looks like many of the enclosures out there are really cheap...
