    Goodbye Firefox

Thanks Chewy. The action is set to Save, not View. For Save, there is no choice of programs (obviously). But I guess this is for PDFs on the web, not for saving a web page as a PDF. Not worth wasting time on this, I'll just continue to use Chrome.

    HOT

I think you know that in California, it is illegal not to provide heating, but not mandatory to provide cooling. Decades ago, when I lived in Fullerton in a rented apartment, such was the case; heating (only in the single bedroom) and no cooling. That sucks, Merc :(

    Goodbye Firefox

SD, I've been doing this for years! My question was aimed at Merc who said the built-in PDF renderer in FF sucked. I was asking how I can force FF to use Acrobat or Foxit as its rendering engine. I checked the settings, but couldn;t find anything meaningful. Adobe PDF is my default printer (for...

Yeah. A cat that used to visit us fell down from the 5th floor outside and died in my arms. It was sickening, I'll spare the gory details. Was a very, very painful experience for us.

    Goodbye Firefox

I have both Foxit and Acrobat Pro (an older version). How do I tell Firefox to use one of these to create PDFs from web pages? I don't see anything in Settings that'll let me do this.

    Goodbye Firefox

I do all my payments online. I "print" the payments screen to a PDF for my records. Chrome is near perfect in this, producing a clean, well-laid out PDF. Firefox sucks. Many financial institutions didn't support anything other than IE and FF before. Now it seems they support Chrome better than...

This makes me glad that I'm not an AT&T customer

jtr, AT&T made promises to get some concessions, then hasn't kept the promises. That is the real problem. I don't think they were naive enough to not know what they were getting into when they made the promises.

    Shingled drives and backup hardware

But Toshiba drives don't seem to fare well. In those drive surveys, or user reviews on various web sites. That is surprising o me; unless Toshiba mucked with the HGST's design / materials / process.

    Shingled drives and backup hardware

There'd be other ramifications in the tape vs drive debate: handling requirements, space requirements, environment requirements, etc. Looks like for Tea's purposes, disk drives match her needs better.

Recommended UPS device for basement NAS

I have two APC Back-UPS RS 1500 units, both purchased in 2006. One had batteries replaced about 4 years ago. Both perform quite well. One gets a UPS for reliability; not point scrimping on a critical item.

    Windows 10

What's not clear (to me) is, if you upgrade within the "free" window, do you never ever have to pay for it? Or is it free to use for one year then shuts down or nags you to pay?

    Windows 10

SD, 1) Win-7 needs to be at SP1 level, and Win 8 at 8.1. 2) The hw must be capable of running Win-10 3) You need to have a certain KB installed; one of the CNet articles I linked to has the info. If you have auto updates on, you should have it. I'm sure you meet all the requirements, so...

I wasn't home Sunday & Monday. Monday night I turn on the PC and a new icon is in the tray. It's the one before the flag. Clicking on it opens a window that talks about Win 10 and says to reserve my copy of it and if I do, it will be download (3GB) when released. There's about 6 screens...

Spot / local heat may be the issue. Since you can't cool the room, perhaps sticking a pedestal fan to blow in or suck out air might help somewhat. Excruciatingly slow writing to external disks

Merc & SD, thanks for the tips on Teracopy & Fastcopy. I tried them and will pass. IMHO, they are not robust and barf on large copy jobs. FYI, my CPU (inconsequential, but nevertheless) is an i5-3570k @ 3.40 GHz. I have 16GB of physical RAM. All drives (even the old ones) had enough free space...

    Is my drive toast?

Wrapping Up! Thanks all, and time. But why did the drive manufacturer's utility, DFT, say the drive was good? That too after running for 63 hours on a 1GB drive that was on an Intel SATA 6 Gbps channel. This is what puzzles me and makes me lose confidence in it. Not only SMART, but even the...

Thanks DD; I'll probably do that. Windows popped up a message that a HDD was bad. So I guess the drive is toast. Puzzled though why DFT says it's good.

    Is my drive toast?

DFT Completed. I need some help folks. For the new 3TB drives, should I run a) DFT or b) just check SMART values + do a long (not quick) format in Windows? I ask because for the bad drive, DFT now says it is fine, and SMART by Crystal DiskInfo went from caution before the DFT to Bad after...

    Is my drive toast?

60 hours exceeded and still not done. There's still a quarter progress bar's worth of white space at the rightmost end, and it's been in that state for the last 5 hours with the drive access light on the case on solid for the last 60 hours. Is it even doing anything? The UI certainly sucks...

    Is my drive toast?

Thanks Buck, that makes sense. Meanwhile it's still chugging away on the 1GB - 25 hours and counting, 16 blocks done, guess another 8 to go on the progress bar. I would think if it maxed out on problems it would stop, but it's still going. Now I'm curious as to the end result.

    Is my drive toast?

Thanks Buck, good to know these details. The drive is out of active service now, and I'm running DFT more out of curiosity. If it is serviceable, it might become one of the 3-5 backup drives I use, or a scratch drive. I guess it would be prudent to run DFT on the new 3 TB HGST drives before...

    Is my drive toast?

Well, the DFT UI isn't very helpful. I first tried running Scan, but apparently that only checks Smart something that runs for hours. I finally figured out that clicking Utils / Surface Long Test is the option I was wanting. After running 2+ hours, progress bar is at 2 blocks on a 1GB drive. No...

Well well well! The vide error LED went off on its own, and after a reboot I'm posting from the desktop. Go figure. Should I sometime soon take everything apart (CPU, RAM), blow compressed air into the sockets and re-seat everything? The CPU heatsink was the Intel retail one with the thermal...

    Is my drive toast?

Aaaaaaaaaargh! When it rains, it pours! I cloned the Windows partition to the 250GB Hitachi and actually booted up with it. Windows wanted to install drivers for it and reboot. Is my drive toast?

Thanks Lunar, but it appears the drive is failing at many spots. I'd rather not take the chance. I did a surface scan of most of the partitions; on the second one, Windows said it found problems and fixed them. Scan kept "hanging" on the last partition, so I did that by booting into Partition...
