    Video Card advice

I guess my situation is a bit weird. I've never had a motherboard, processor, RAM, video card, any PCI card, powersupply, disk drive, optical go bad on me. I started building my own PCs in 1991. I've had about 4 fans fail - CPU HSF fan, GPU fan, case fans. And one floppy drive. That's it. I...

Good luck, my friend. If they're having you back, they're interested. If you took the job, would you be moving out of your present location, then? If I were you I would have asked for a different schedule, at least for the outbound part of the journey (I know it's too late, though). It's no...

    Video Card advice

For me, Gigabyte is in the shit house. I feel the same way about them that Merc does about Western Digital. The new video card I bought died within 2 months. Choice of thermal compound

Enermax's Noisetaker line of PSUs are designed to exhibit "diseling" characteristics - fans run on for a few minutes even after computer is shut down. See 4th item in product features here, labeled "Smart Fan". IIRC, Merc's power supply couldn't power an X2, so he bought a 600W Enermax that...

According to Dow Corning, AMD uses Dow's TC-5022 in it's factory heatsinks for A64 Proc-in-box. Dow claims "TC-5022 improves thermal performance 10-15 percent compared to existing materials". This page at Dow lets you compare the compounds, including TC-5022 and 340. Not that I understand all...

    Weird slowdown

The present web server is starved for RAM, IMHO. Shite, most of us have 1GB on our personal machines, and this sever has only that much even though it's hosting several sites. They need to up it to 4GB with the new one (or this one, I'll bet they see a substantial jump in performance).
