    Upgrade to 2.0.19

Update: I closed the browser, and when I started it again, the end-of-session cookies were gone (#1 & #2); #3 was still there. When I logged in now, I got 2 new end-of session cookies. Cookies #3, the data cookie, was either replaced or updated to expire on Monday, January 08, 2007 12:03:16 p.

    Upgrade to 2.0.19

Nope. I have FF set to delete cookies when I close it. I also have exceptions defined for sites that I want cookies not to be deleted. SF is one of the exceptions. Before the upgrade, things were just fine; my SF cookie(s) logged me in automatically. I haven't made any change to the way cookies...

    Upgrade to 2.0.19

Thanks, Doug. The only extensions I have installed are : Tab Mix Plus 0.2.5.2 netcrafttoolbar 1.1.1 This same set up worked flawlessly with SF before the upgrade; I haven't made any changes at all to my set up in the last several weeks. Except to keep my AVG updated and installing the MS WMF...

    Musings on a new PC

Thanks Coug and Merc, this is very valuable advice and exactly the kind of analysis I was hoping for. Main concern with Linux is app compatibility. I did play a little with SuSe 9, and felt it was not something I could switch to. I presume, Merc, that you haven't had any app incompatibilities...

    Upgrade to 2.0.19

Doug, I'm not complaining, just trying to let you know what's happening. The site is setting two cookies, one to expire at the end of the session and another that expires at the end of a year (2007). But it appears to not look for the one-year cookie on a subsequent visit. That is why it is...

    Musings on a new PC

Sorry Merc, didn't answer your question WRT to NVidia/Via. The honest answer is I don't know. The perception I have is that NVidia is "higher-end", with better performance and flexibility for overclocking. Since I plan to do only a moderate amount of overclocking, I don't know if Via will fit...

    Musings on a new PC

Thanks Will & Merc. WRT storage, there are two ways to go. If I win the Lotto, it'll be SAS & Savvio, with Gary being the prime consultant. :D If not, it'll be SATA (I'll ditch my current PATA drives), probably 2 x 250GB. Samsung or Hitachi, TBD closer to buying time. I'll keep my current...

    Musings on a new PC

Thanks, Coug. I took a detaild look at the Opt-165, but it'll need extensive overclocking to get near 2.6 GHz (44%). I'm not comfy with that much; I'd be pushing many crucial parts to their limits, and what I'll save on CPU cost I'll end up spending on super-fast RAM. That's why I'm targeting a...

Want to RMA your Hitachi HDD? Read this!

My thoughts exactly! Even if a bad guy agreed to the terms while in violation of them, and gets caught, what are they going to get him for? Breach of contract? Sheesh, the games that are played! As Tony pointed out, they fall under the broad category of C-Y-A!

    Athlon 64 & 4x RAM

On a tangential note: The more recent A64 chips run all 4 sticks at DDR-400; the memory controllers in older generation chips throttled down to DDR-333 if 4 sticks were used. Some motherboard manufacturers are very upfront on the product page about both the speed and the max-RAM issue (notably...

    Weird slowdown

Doug: The ocassional slowdown isn't worth fixing at so high a cost; we can easily live with it. Thanks for even thinking about it, though. The speed now is quite good; page load was quite snappy. Looking at the last link you provided, they seem to be out of physical RAM (95% used, with only...

    Musings on a new PC

My current PC is getting long in the tooth; I built it new 5+ years ago. I have to wait when I scroll a one-page PDF created by my scanner (doc is not optimized, I guess). You need to diffuse the light, as LM said; that will kill the highlights and light up the crevices. But diffused lighting will need more powerful lights in the first place since there is so much loss. I did some macro shooting of rings a couple of days back (used the sunlight coming in the room...

Region checks work in 2 places simultaneously: the hardware (drive) and software (the player). To defeat it, you'll need to "fix" both areas. I'm a Linux noobie, but I'll assume that the player you have doesn't care about regions. You fix the hw by installing firmware that defeats the region...
