32-bit. And it was dying at a point that I've never seen the installer die at, too, pretty much the moment the installer starts loading the integrated storage drivers. Of course, once I got Windows up and running, the SATA ports worked fine, but I still think that's an odd behavior.

I'm not the expert on that issue! As far as my new build went... I don't know if anyone else had an issue with this, but my Gigabyte board (GA-K8N Pro) absolutely refused to install XP until I disabled all the SATA channels. I'd get a bluescreen error while it was loading the initial driver...

    Something Random

Demonoid.com has a cracked OSXx86 10.4.4 (that's the shipping version) generic install DVD online. No support for nVidia graphics (go Apple!) or CPUs that don't have SSE2, and AMD users have to apply another patch to make it work, but it's out there.

Evidently, I will be buying a $100 sound card in 2005

Finally got around to installing one of the X-Plosions. It is, needless to say, breathtaking. For my sample this time, I treated myself to the full 2:24:03 of "Lord of the Rings" soundtracks from lossless FLAC source. There's a great mix of music in that, from strings, heavy percussion...

Pro lets you have more network connections at a time, but I doubt you have enough PCs sitting around for that to matter, either. It's actually an issue for me, which is why all my Windows machines are running some variation of Windows Server. Well, that and I hate XP. -- The nforce4 + Scythe...

    Current video card recommendations

Er... I'm almost positive that every ATI card with two outputs can do this. It's mostly just a matter of configuring Windows' display properties for it. A quick check of the Windows machines I can see from where I'm sitting shows three computers that all have a secondary display.

Nothin' wrong with a flat chest. Waist, hips, butt, calves, cheekbones, lips... - those are the things that really make a woman look like a woman. I'd rather see a lady with a flat chest than one with ginormous implants. And seriously, if you think a woman looks like a man just because she...

Where are the big 4:3 LCDs?

I think it has a lot with the way people use their computers. Most people, me included, tend to work with a single maximized application at a time. Other apps may be running, but generally, I only have one big window at a time on-screen (usually on their own desktop). In that case, beyond a...

    Windows *Vista*

New Vista build should be out by the end of the week. Supposedly a feature-complete version. Supposedly everything that will be in the shipping version except for some of the artwork. I don't know if that includes things like the "free" version of VirtualPC (available in the "Ultra" edition) or...

See subject. My favorite monitor - a Viewsonic P815 (21", .22 dot pitch, can do 150Hz refresh @ 1280x1024) - is on its last legs. I want to replace it with another 4:3 display of slightly larger size. 23", 24", something like that. Something that would make 1600x1200 comfortable to view. Why...

Can any one help me to understand NAS?

What kinds of workloads are you expecting to have? NAS could mean anything from a Linksys NSLU2 with a 40GB USB hard disk attached, to something like a Buffalo Tech Terastation (HD-H1.0TGL) to a NetApp Flier. On the low end, NAS is meant to represent a simplified storage solution for workgroups...

Well, technically, we could anyway, since the wording of the 22nd amendment specifies consecutive terms. Clinton is rather more right-wing than I'd prefer, but I can respect him as a thoughtful human being, and I can't attribute either of those qualities to the blob of pure evil presently...

    2.5" HDD review

The former IBM makes notoriosly awful 2.5" hard disks and always has. I was pleased to find a Fujitsu drive in my T40, as I've heard tales of OEMs taking delivery of two IBM/Hitachi 2.5" drives for every one they order.

You don't need anything else to capture DV, except 1394 ports. MS continues to hate consumers and hobbyists

That's a really good question, but it annoys me on principle. Maybe because there's no mechanism in place for Microsoft to handle it through OEMs? Probably 80%+ of the copies of XP that've been sold, ever, have been OEM copies. Even if they're just flatly saying motherboard change =...
