It is the newer term Conventional MR as compared to the horrid shingles.

This is not new. AFAIK all drives have used PMR for years, even the ones with shingles. As other features such as HMR and MMR enter the market it makes more sense to use CMR as a generic term for a drive that has no shingles, HMR, MMR, etc.

It turns out that shingled is also perpendicular. So, technically, PMR includes SMR.

They had to coin a new term for what we were all calling PMR that's not SMR.

What are the thoughts on Toshiba hard drives in 2019? I recall they were given some Hitachi 3.5' technology some years ago to alleviate the WD and Seagate duopoly. In the early days of 1TB/platter the Toshiba drives were cheap but not very reliable. :(

I thought @Stereodude was using 6TB Toshiba drives in his NAS but I might have that wrong. Maybe he can share his experiences.

Now I'm not seeing many sellers of the Toshiba. Are they mainly used in other countries?
