I just checked, and we are a few days short of 6 years since the first accounts were created. I'd like to thank everyone here for making it such a nice and easy place to be. And of course special thanks to Handruin for running the place!

*cough* Edit, Splash, iGary...and most of all, you Scarecrow...err, I mean 'Wiz' :D *cough*.

Thanks all should go to Handy, much accolades for putting up with all those trying times in your own life, and running the show here all by yourself (recall SR has a team).

Now is about time for that database crash, oops I accidentally erased all of the posts, doing some screwing around, and not having it all backed up...a la Eugene & Co. ;)

Life without SF??????????

So what would ddrueding do without SF, go through cold turkey withdraw/depression along with his partner in crime Merc...end up on  SR? :puke-l::cursin::eek4::eek3::bibber:

What would I do without SF? Know a lot less and work a lot more ;) For years I haven't had any good friends living nearby, you guys have made me not even notice. Thanks.

It is hard to believe that it has been that long. If there was not unique value here, people would have gone back to SR or been distracted by "life" and simply disappeared. Some did, but it is amazing that enough have stayed to keep it interesting.

That was not very nice!

But SF is great because of the people who visit here. Many thanks to Doug for making it happen.

This thread inspired me to take an extra backup tonight (thanks Udaman).

It was Davin...yes.

I believe the actual day was some time back in December, not January. I just started my 7th year at EMC and I know I started this forum before working there. Not all the ground work was in place and I was still trying to get a forum working. We have those e-mail lists going around and it was actually Clocker who made it happen. Had he not included me on the list, I would have never known people were looking for another home after SR. Once I saw that, I tried to setup my own forum (php 1.4 I think it was) and got a basic thing going. I'll digress for a second to mention that phpbb very recently went gold with phpbb3...making it just about 6 years for them to upgrade their software from version 2 to version 3. That's one of the reasons I went to a paid product...that's a long software development time by any means.

This place has had a lot of fond memories, and its share of personal drama to go with it. Some have stayed the course and not let it bother them and others gave in and couldn't stand it. We may not be a huge bored, but I always tend to lean on the information gathered here rather than most places on the net.

Sure, I keep the lights on, but if no one was here to use this place, it would be pointless. I try to keep it running even though I know not every choice I've made has kept people happy, but I'm trying to balance it out.

I'm going through some of my old archives and stuff to dig up some old logos. One is from SR, and the others are things I tried to create back when this site was actually my handruin.com (before I bought the SF domain name).

I learned a lot from the old SR back in 1997 (I don't really know the exact year I started to frequent the place) as a lurker. There wasn't a day I didn't visit. But I had less than 10 posts. My handle there was "Crispulo"

Really was a fan of a person named Tony Wilson, and the ultra-sharp pictures he had on the Redhill website, so much so I PM'd a few people when I noticed he wasn't posting. That's when I learned he took off every now and then for a vacation.

Don't remember how I got to SF as I didn't know you guys migrated. But it was like coming home. 300+ posts only means I am very comfortable here.

Thanks to everyone, especially Handruin.

BTW, I miss Coug and the Bartender.

It's like a movie where the character development is great.

Yes. On the evening of 12/28/01 I was talking to TimZak (aka Holeywood) on the phone about some upcoming optical drive reviews and just about flipped after hearing the news.

Ditto!

Most of what I know came from SR and SF. My sincere thanks to you guys!

I remember Crispulo for some reason. And it was a post made by Tony on SR that brought me here. My thanks especially to him.

Y'all a bunch of swell guys, despite that occasional heated exchange caused by differences in opinion (a bit of spice is what makes food taste good, no?)

Most of all, thanks to Handy for making this happen, and for not banning me when I flamed out from time to time. :)

It's amazing to me that it's been that long. I was a sophomore in college when the SR crash happened. Which, truly seems like a lifetime ago for me.

I definitely think it's the people that make this place. The cohesiveness and amazing knowledge of this group is unsurpassed.

This is the first site I check in the morning and the last at night. Thanks to Handruin for making it happen and keeping it together, but also everyone else for making the finest resource on the net and the best community possible.

It was Tony/Tannin/Tea that brought me here, but it was the people on this forum that has kept me here. Thanks all and happy birthday.

I didn't realize it's been that long but it has. It's also probably been at least 2 years since I posted at SR. I was there recently just to check if I had any PMs. The place is practically unrecognizable.

The fact that StorageForum is still a viable community after 6 years, despite its small membership, says a lot for the diversity and intelligence of this group. I can't think of any other site with only a few dozen regulars which would be worth coming back to for this long. No matter where my travels take me, be it Train-Sim.com, or Candlepowerforums, I always come back here once in a while.

Thanks Doug for keeping the lights on! :salut::cheers::bow::beer::thumbleft: Now that it's 2008 just make sure they're LEDs! :mrgrn:

I, too, recall Tony as being an influential voice both on SR and SF. Can't remember who recruited me to SF after the MBF, but I am grateful. I was still involved with discussions on SR for some time after that, but I eventually stopped going to SR and made SF my "home" online.

I know I'm not alone in turning to the community here at SF when I've needed company or a diversion from life. You have provided me with comfort at times when I needed it the most. And for that, I am truly grateful to Doug and all of our members... Thank you.

I didn't participate at all when StorageForum was first started --I didn't post at SR back then either (despite reading the posts there quite regularly)--, but I would like to chime in and say that I find this forum to be quite a unique place, one of the very best little corners of the 'net --and that goes for just about any subject imaginable.

SR was the very first forum (website for that matter!) that I read consistently on the net, and I have to say that it's pretty remarkable to see some of those people still around after all this time.

I just hope I can add to this place in some small way. And that it keeps going going until the internet itself is old & dusty & empty (that's kind of crazy to think about...).

Thanks everyone.

Seven years isn't all that long ago. I am sure that most of all of us do range a bit farther afield than just this site these days, but this is still my homepage and is still the place I start my day.

I am glad for everyone who visits and for everyone who contributes. Thank you all.

Wow, 7 years?

Here's a bit of history:

I was in grad school, studying a fair bit of statistics. I remember talking (on the phone!) with Davin some about setting up a reliability survey. From what I remember, his early methods were far from rigorous. I think I proposed a few ways to make it more scientific, and than....BAM. No more SF. Davin and Eugene were talking about shutting SF down. I begged them not to. Somehow SF got started again some time later, and by then I was over at SF. I don't think I ever re-started a new SF account. And then some time later I remember seeing the reliability survey up and running, but the methods were "proprietary" - IIRC they claimed it was so people couldn't intentionally enter bogus results. Or perhaps it's to cover up the methodology out of embarrassment. Who knows.

But here I am still. Thanks to all for a great 7 years!

I recall that Tony debunked the hard drive "reliability" database. :)
