The most notable drops occur in the Turion family (low-power mobile CPUs).

The dual core Athlon X2 models also become a bit cheaper, so that doesn't hurt.

Somehow somebody forgot to update the regular A64 prices when this was first released. This is the current price list.

What's sad is that they are phasing out A64 2800+ and 3000+. Now the entry level is 3200+. But it had to be phased out - Sempron 3300+/3400+ has about the same, if not better performance than a 3000+ and all the other A64 features: CnQ, NX, 64-bit.

It was actually quite interesting to watch as the Sempron (S754) prices went up once Socket A was terminated. The prices are still higher than in the summer, despite this price drop. :-?

Thanks for the correction. One thing the A64 3000+ had that the Sempron 3300+/3400+ don't is four time the amount of L2 cache. And it generally overclocks better than the cache-crippled processors. The 3200+, because of its higher multiplier, is even better (the 3000+ is often memory bus-limited).

But for most users, it's true that a Sempron 3400+ is a better value than an Athlon 64 3000+.

Cache-crippled or not, there's nothing wrong with the Sempron 3400. They're a truly great deal, truth be told.

Actually, S64 3400+ is 2 GHz/256k, whereas S64 3300+ is 2 GHz/128k. Compare that with S754 A64 3000+, which is 2 GHz/512k (NewCastle) and S939 A64 3000+, which is 1,8 GHz/512k.

True, the S939 A64 has dual memory channel and double the cache, but S64 has clockspeed advantage. X-bit labs tests 3400+.

The S64 3400+ isn't that much cheaper than S939 A64 3000+, but the S754 motherboards are cheaper, and one gets the best performance with just one stick of RAM.

I was playing a lot with GNU/Linux and VDR during the summer. I didn't participate that much in the forums, but I did follow most of the interesting discussions. Waking up before 6AM on weekdays to go to work - that really set the pace for the whole summer... Did watch a ton of TV (guess why), built a few computers, did actually try to relax every now and then. Time really flies when you're busy!
