Best 24" LCD monitor

Anyone know what the best 24" LCD monitor is? I'm starting to toss around the idea of replacing my 20" Dell LCD (FP2000) with a new widescreen 24". They seem to all be using the same Samsung 24" LCD panel that's got a brightness of 500cd/m^2 and 1000:1 contrast ratio. The Dell 2407 looks pretty nice, but wasn't sure if some of you prefered the Acer, Samsung, Gateway, etc more.

I would prefer HDCP compliance, and I don't care too much about s-video, composite or component inputs.

I have the 2405 panel, way brighter than I need, run it at about 10 on the scale. Great picture.

I've purchased four of the Dell 2405s. I have one myself and I've bought others customers.
One thing I will note about them: All of them have had at least one stuck pixel.

After sitting at the Dell, it's very hard to go back to lower brightness and contrast of the 17 - 20" LCDs I have.

So, it seems that people love to hate their 2407's. People are all worried about which revision they're getting. Seems A04 is the latest, and hasn't really showed up in retail channels in the US yet.

I have a 2407 rev 2 It has no stuck pixels. It's an excellent monitor.

Seems like the 24" LCD monitor is due for a price drop here soon. 22" widescreen is about $350, seems that $700 for a 24" is a bit out of line.

$700 is out of line for a 24" widescreen. I can get another 22" standard for that price.

But I think the price difference between the 24" and 22" wide screens has more to do with the resolution than the actual size.

Well having come from a LCD manufacturing background, I can assure you that's not a big factor. The actual panel cost could be fairly close (near linear relationship between size (square inches) and cost).

I mean, how come you can get a 1920x1080 37" LCD TV for $1100. And, it's got a HDTV tuner and other additional circuitry. But, a 24" LCD of similar resolution is ~65-70% of the cost. It should be less than 1/2, probably a lot less.

Probably because the smaller guys are commodity items while the bigger PC displays still have the cachet - and profit margin - of "high end" items. I'm sure there's no end of folks who are ditching their 21" CRTs and picking the only LCDs that's measurably bigger than what they had, which is a 24" display.

Probably, but the 27" (1920x1200) and 30" (2560x1600) LCD monitors are going to start putting the squeeze on the 24". The 30" Dell is already under $1300, which oddly enough is the same price as the new 27".

I would probably think long and hard about getting the 30" given the current pricing (not withstanding that my current video card can't drive it).

One approach to large LCD monitors for some of you might be to buy a 1080p HDTV monitor. Get one with an inbuilt HD tuner, and it could double as both a telly and a computer monitor running at 1920x1080 resolution.

I looked at doing that but the pixel pitch on a TV is rather too high for my liking.

No one has mentioned that there are likely different panel types involved. For example the 22" Dell uses a TN panel (the lowest of the lows in the LCD panel world) whereas the the big guys use S-IPS panels (the supposed creme de la creme of the LCD panel world). How much of a cost difference that would inspire?

In the 24" arena, I'm pretty sure they're all the same 24" Samsung panel,with the exception of the 24" NEC.

They all are 500cd/m^2 and 1000:1 CR with a 6ms response time.

I wouldn't consider S-IPS the creme de la creme either. It's better than TN, but Samsung's S-PVA, Sharp's ASV and some of the other wide viewing technologies seem better IMHO.

Recently purchased a BenQ FP241W 24" 1920x1200 LCD. Very nice. Wide screen is great for photo editing, as I can have all the tools flanking the editing area on the sides and still have enough room for the image at its full 3:2 width.

They are the main OEM manufacturer for the Dell UltraSharp 2407FPW. Rev A03 and A04 2407FPW's (I think) and all current BenQ FP241W panels are based on AUOptronics P-MVA M240UW01 V0 panel, which supposedly is a change from the Samsung S-PVA panel used in previous revisions of the Dell 2407. Newer BenQ FP241WZ and FP241VW models even use AUOptronics' A-MVA M240UW01 V2 panel.

I never ended up buying a 24" LCD monitor. I'm currently thinking of getting a 30" Dell 3007WFP-HC now instead or maybe two. I have an AGP 7600GT on the way with two dual-link DVI outputs for my desktop PC so I'll be able to drive 'em should the need arise.

Well... I don't play games, so that doesn't matter to me. However, if I recall correctly the top end nVidia 8800GTX has enough oomph to play games at that resolution.

Nope. But if my 7950GT can handle 1600x1200, a new card should manage the new resolution.
