My hard drives are enarly full and only one drive letters remains. I was planning to buy one o the 7K400 models as a stopgap measure, but they are not widely avaialble and rahter pricey. When will the 400MB Seagato drive be available? Are there otehr 400GB drives planned soon?

Sorry for the typos. Nobody knows nothin', eh? ;) I hope to hold out for a few 400GB beasties. There are seventeen drives online out of about 28 drives trotal, but only ~400 GB free space. :(

Everything is within 12' of my head if that is what you mean. Eight drives are external.

I figure about 3.6 TB (decimal) just from what's in that list. What on earth do you need all that storage for? That must be a really nice pr0no collection you have. ;)

Seriously, is this video? I can't imagine anything else needing this much space, and yes, we are promised a drive next year which will hold everything you have. It will be based on holgraphic storage, will be no larger than a credit card, and will hold 10TB. I'm joking of course-the only constant in storage is that we've been promised something like this for at least the last decade. Given the struggles to increase areal density, I doubt we'll see anything larger than 400GB any time soon, at least on the mechanical drive front. I'm holding my breath for a breakthrough in solid state storage. That's the only way I see us getting drives much past perhaps 1 TB.

Heh, I'm not waiting for bigger hard drives...
I'm waiting for cheaper bigger hard drives... :mrgrn:

I have a workaround by having more computers with more drives...
and just firewire can take 30some odd devices... doesn't mean you should...
One video server... one music server... one image server... one Anime server...
One important work/school/class server with tripled mirrored drives for ubercritical stuff... one MAME/dosbox server....

the uses are endless... the disk usage is endless... my wallet is not :-(

No, its not that. (Remember I only have a dial-up connection.) There are 5.3TB in total, including some off-site storage, but not including 250GB in notebook drives.

I found this thread at SR. I hope the time frames are reasonably correct.

Er, I have at least twice what Lunar does. Spread out over more computers, but still.
I store a lot of video.

And porn.

It adds up.

Any guesses as to the effect on cost a 400GB+ Samsung would do?
500$? for a 400GB?
250$? for a 300GB?
200$? for a 250GB?

a 500GB drive...
imageine 8 x 500GB RAID5...
my only complaint with such big drives..
is the lack of comparable affordable back up media.
Even 200GB Tape back ups would be nice...
Can't wait for the 500GB Disc....
sigh...

and I've only got 2TB... Time to sell another organ...

The Hitachi 400GB drive is running $439-532 at the moment so any other drives would have to be comparably priced or cheaper.

200GB backup tpaes. I use LTO2 at work. At home my data is modularized & burned to DVD. Really, I mostly offload it from the PC itself so my online storage needs aren't that great at the moment.

I'm looing for hard drives at the other end of the spectrum.
Most of our computers gather data and then forward it to the next process. The files are small so we don't need a lot of space. Most of our "file servers" only have 18GB SCSI hard drives in them. Most of that space is empty.
What I would like to see are 20GB IDE/SATA hard drives with 8Meg cache, at least a 3 year warreny, and very fast access times. Right now we are buying WD400JB drives and only formating the first 10GB of space. Seems a waste.

I've heard the same complaint before Bozo, it also seems that these small capacity drives are always sold at a premium.

Get ready to exhale -- in a couple of months.

Seagate's 7200.8 SATA and PATA drives are coming, with capacities up to 400 GB using only 3 platters instead of the 5 platters that the Hitachi 400 GB unit has. A 3-platter drive should cost less.

Sounds like you've unwittingly worked yourself into a data storage management disaster.

You need to build an IP SAN or similar storage strategy that has both online and near-line capability.

Keyword being affordable. For the moderate media user backing up 1+TB to DVDs isn't an easy thing to do and finding tape backups >100GB is pricey.

We should make a thread on back up strategies. Like modulized data, case scenarios and the like. How to backup music, video, data that gets updated in certain ways...

If DVDs, even dual-layer, aren't high enough capacity and 100+GB tape drives are too expensive, perhaps just buying more hard drives is your best solution. Add the drive, clone data to it, and de-install it. When done, off-site if possible.

A less expensive tape option would be AIT2 or 3. AIT2 is 50GB native. Drives can be had for under $1000 (even cheaper from ebay) and tapes are around $40 each.

Personally, I've decided that my media, which is a measily 500GB or so, is not valuable enough to back up. I'm burning it to DVD to organize it and free up space. Nothing is really being duplicated. If I lose it I'd be disappointed, but it wouldn't kill me by any stretch. My valuable files -- Word & Excel stuff mostly -- I'll back up on occasion.

Yeah, that is the drive I was referring to above as the 400MB Seagato [sic]. I wanted to know if anyone had information on other drives besides the 7200.8 and 7K400.

Got a file server running Win2K Server or Win2K3 Server running a nicely expandable RAID? Got a small-time switched Ethernet LAN (preferably 1 GbE)? If so, then you're well past half way to being able to read and write block data.

All you need then is iSCSI Target software running on your Win2K/2K3 Server and iSCSI initiator software running on your workstation. Linux will soon be another choice for iSCSI.

Well now, there WAS a rather persistent rumour of a 500 GB Seagate ATA (SATA / PATA) for a few months before the "400 GB" Seagate announcement back in June.

If you will now switch your brain into an imaginary Non Disclosure Agreement mode of thinking:
I suspect there could have easily been a 500 GB unit being tested for a while, but after all the disc grinding activities settled, Seagate (and buddies) likely decided for some reason or another that a 3-platter hard drive was better than a 4-platter hard drive -- or this 4-platter hard drive still needed to undergo more disc grinding activities before it could be released as a product, or... (pick one of dozens of scenarios).

If this new Seagate 7200.8 series is anything like the 200 GB (7200.7½ ?), and I suspect is will be, you might be pleasantly surprised at its overall performance. I know someone (locally) who installed a 200 GB 7200.7 into a new-ish Gateway computer, and just from a personal observation, it definitely seemed to have more zippy-ness than the "older generation" 160 GB 7200.7 that I use at home for dumping various large and small files onto.

Maybe I was t-r-y-i-n-g to recall THIS recently:
  • [list:f9b6a8c8da] From 1 Inch to 500 Gbytes: Seagate Unveils Wide Range Of New Drives

...On the enterprise side, the company introduced the NL35 series, which includes a 500-Gbyte drive with a Fibre Channel interface aimed at the near-line storage market for such applications as disk-to-disk backups, virtual tape backup and recovery, image and document management, and lower-tiered storage of regulatory compliance or other business data, company executives said. The new drives are expected to be available in the fourth quarter.

    http://www.crn.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=22100006&flatPage=true

For a PDF File at Seagate:

The only one- half- terabyte disc drive for cost- effective tiered nearline storage KEY FEATURES AND BENEFITS ° The Seagate ® NL35 Series offers 0.5- terabyte capacity in low- profile (one- inch high), 3.5-inch...

    http://www.seagate.com/content/docs/pdf/marketing/Seagate_NL35.pdf
[/list:u:f9b6a8c8da] The NL35 series will first appear with a Fibre Channel interface in the next few weeks, then with a SATA2 interface in Q1 of 2005.

Competing with Maxtor's MaxLine hard drives, Seagate NL35 series is a 7200 RPM drive with a 1 Million Hour MTBF rating.

One starts finding 7200.8 drives 300 and 400 GB, see for instance "Computerbroker" in Switzerland.
Prices are still steep, with a smallish 8MB cache: the price is 50% higher per GB than the latest Maxtor drive, which boasts a 16 MB cache, but is limited to 300 GB.

An interesting question would be to ask why such a price difference especially for the competing 300 GB drives, where the Maxtor drive would be expected to be more expensive as it has a larger cache.

I think the cost of cache is relatively little compared to making a 5-platter drive. The 3-platter 7200.8 will be much less expensive to produce than the 7K400, so prices of 400GB drives will decrease after a while. I am not comfortable with drives from NewEgg. Do they still package hard drives poorly?

Well, all I can say is "wow!" I guess this is why it's called storageforum, huh? I can't imagine what I would ever do with anything more than 100gb (the thought of it actually nauseates me). Ugh, I'm getting claustrophobia! I like computers but when we talk in 5 and 6 TB's, I get a headache...lol. I guess it's because I'm a neat freak. I gotta know what files I have and where they are. With 5TB I think I would have to get a faster and larger brain.
Sorry this was not a beneficial post. I just had to make some commentary. Ha.

I wrote software to help me sort it. It's not really a big deal. Lots of people basically do the same thing with their email.

Clocker, LM already said most of his drives are external firewire units.

...which is about when the 500 GB NL35 model will start to trickle out (but not in ATA / SATA until a while later). The 400 GB 7200.8 is a "desktop" drive, whereas the NL35 model is an "enterprise" model, meaning the NL35 and the MaxLine will be competitors in the behemoth class for corporate second-tier storage.

Given the price of a present-day 7200.7 160 and 200, the 7200.8 should end up being about US$150 less than the present-day HitachIBM 400.

Hey, what happened to my post:?: Anyway, I will replace the 740GD with a 300GB DM+10 for a while or permanently if there is a larger and better WD GD in the wings.

I'd settle for the old one if it didn't keep throwing file not found errors.

I don't know, what is worse, file not found or illegal operation? Why did the operation suddenly become illegal? It was perfectly legal ten years ago.
