1GB sticks are a little under $100...that is where it's been for as long as I've been watching.

For example I got 2 1gig DDR2 PC667 SODIMMS for $80 in April for my Core Duo notebook. Today they are over $100. They were even more expensive a few weeks ago.

DDR2 prices were actually lower than DDR until about a week before AM2 was released. They've been unreasonably high ever since.

I don't keep track of SODIMMS, but standard Non-ECC 667MHz 240-pin Unbuffered DIMMs have dropped for me by a few dollars within the past two weeks. It would be nice if I could sell a 1GB stick for $99.00. With the popularity of this memory type, I would expect a lower price. Although, I've noticed more product shortages as the shopping season moves into full swing. Most notably with AMD processors and higher frequency DIMM sticks. I've signed up with another distributor to help steady my product supply and hopefully lower my prices. We'll see how things go starting next week. Ironically, AM2 boards have been in abundant supply (just get me more CPUs!). Separate from that, Core 2 Duo and the new 5xxx series Xeon chips have been in abundant supply.

I'm still looking at a AM2 4200+ based system for my HTPC upgrade. The memory prices for 2 1GB DDR2-800 sticks are giving me heartburn. I priced it all out at Newegg yesterday, and it came to about $800 for a CPU, Mobo, RAM, Video card, Power Supply, and CPU cooler.
I'd prefer a Core 2 Duo E6400 as it seems you get better performance per $$$ there, but the only motherboards that will work for my upgrade (I want 3 usuable PCI slots + built in firewire) are real Intel boards that require even more expensive 1.8V, exactly JEDEC compliant DDR2 DIMMS from a list of supported "pretested" modules. In addition that would leave me only able to support 2 IDE devices (where I'd like 4), so I have to pick up another SATA drive further adding to the cost.

Why are you bothering with DDR2-800?
I tend to set up HTPCs using the MythTV model: The computer by the AV components has to be good enough for playback, but there can be a back end someplace else for storage and transcoding.

The benchmarks show you get extra performance the faster your RAM is... So it seemed to make sense.
I was thinking to cut it back to only 2 512's instead of using 2 1 gig sticks though. I want a machine that's adequate for Blue-Ray and HD-DVD playback in the future. Hence the HDCP compliant video card and the 4200+ X2.
