What's the difference between those two models? The second is only sold at one of my suppliers and it's a lot more expensive than the first, yet their specifications look similar.

0F12460 is listed here:

No sign of 0S03230, might be a previous years model, or a model known to die early which they've snuffed out without fanfare? (aborted DeathStar etc).

For a laugh go to the first page of the PDF. Hmm, where is reliability in that equation....?

Actually if the model number is the same and the part number varies it's likely an "enhanced availability" model, i.e. less chance of going tits up after being asked to work 24*7.

Seems like in this case it's more a case of charging for the new shiny, rather than expectations of reliability.

All of the ones I have are the 0F12460 part number and were made in the Thailands. I hope Hitachi has alternate suppliers. :cyclopsani:

I have my two, still unopened, Hibachi 0F12115 (7K3000 2TB). I've not been able to get the 1TB-per-platter I wanted, but at least for now, I'm ok. I've been able to buy an additional 500GB drive for less than 50$ yesterday so maybe I'll make it untill the end of the month without shortage. I won't, of course, be able to last untill January, when the shortage is supposed to end.

Do you think WD/Hitachi Thailand will be in full operation that soon or just that Seagate/Samsung will crank up the Chinese output?

I think that I read somewhere that the production should resume in January. It might be longer than that before we receive drives in normal quantities.

The 3TB 7K3000 drives I have use 5x 600GB platters. Perhaps the lower capacities can be made with 1Tb platters or there will be a B or C version. If not, there will be 7K4000, etc. drives later.

For now, only the 7K1000.D uses the 1TB platter and there's only one platter per drive. As Mooner wrote, the 7K3000 family uses lesser density platters.

The 0S03230 is the retail 3TB drive from Hitachi. Once you remove the drive, it usually ends up being the 0F12450 drive actually inside, hope this helps !!
