Could a few people download the following tiff image and let me know what your average KB/s (or MB/s if you have a fast connection?

http://www.handruin.com/public-image/squirrel.tiff

The file is 23.5 MB (24,684,208 bytes) in size. I'm noticing serious speed issues on the download and I want to know if it's comcast, or the data center.

I'm getting between 30-40 KB/sec at the moment.

It started out real strong at 240KB/s and then dropped to the 120-180 range but was bouncing all over that range, not too steady.

Verizon DSL at (Down/Up) 3360 KBits/Sec by 864 KBits/Sec says my modem.

A few days ago I posted a comment on their message boards regarding my dismal download speeds and the owner and staff ran some tests only to come back with something in the range of 450-500 KB/s from their own ISP's. Much like MaxBurn commented on, my speeds seem to jump around a lot which tells me there is some massive congestion somewhere closer to them, but maybe at a level that doesn't affect everyone. Tim, I'm on a 6Mbit line and it's also very slow for me. But I also wasn't ruling out comcast for being a bunch of fruitcakes with their service quality.

I just can't figure out where the bottle neck is. Our hosting company has changed owners and all I ever read these days on their message boards are people leaving/complaining. Other than this current issue we haven't had any serious problems in the past few months so I wasn't eager to run out the door... I was hoping to have moved out of my house by now. I've seriously been thinking about getting the business level FIOS and hosting this myself. It's just an idea I've been throwing around.

I'm getting 22.5 KB/s on a 8 Mbps Comcast connection.

Just as a side note. I had to restart it three times because twice it immediately finished at around 200k.

OK, I think that's enough to show a problem with the data center/host rather than just my ISP.

If anyone else wouldn't mind trying the test, it will give me more information to pass along. At least with this I know we have a nice variety of folks from all over the place trying the same test.

The squirrel is overexposed and too blue, but file download was normal a couple of hours ago. I have a slow line only 88-90KB/sec anyway.

I think I tweaked it a bit too much. I have another sample of it that might have some better colors. The exposure would be from the camera. I used the AV setting to adjust via aperture. The day was overcast/gray and drizzling.

I have the hosting company looking into the NOC for some issues. They are not seeing any transfer problems and they're getting 400-500+ KB/sec trasnfer rates.

Would anyone that noticed slow transfer speeds be willing to send me a tracert via PM. They still claim there is no problem, and I'd like to give them a few sample tracert's to show the problem isn't just with my ISP.

I'm downloading at an average of 30kB/sec over a 6Mbit cable line that really isn't being used at all, otherwise. I'd call that pathetic.

I'd send a Traceroute, but Comcast has had ICMP blocked on my cable segment for the last several months.

I just ran a test off a linux VM using wget from work with a very fast result! This isn't consistent with the performance we're seeing.

I got 359 KB/sec. Roadrunner recently upgraded from 5 Mb/sec to 7 Mb/sec. In other words, the download should have been ~800 KB/sec. I still seem to be getting better speeds than everyone else here though.

Not really sure. It's comcast (cable) and I just got it about 4 days ago. I'll test it right now.

download.com = 250KB/s
microsoft.com = 380KB/s

so, no...not really.

I just tested the squirrel again, about 20KB/s

I am not on Comcast. I use RCN. I tried it from work as well and it was in the 30KB range throughout the download.

Seems like things float all over the place with this server. How is it theSwede gets the best transfer!?! :D I've relayed the info to the server team. I hope they don't blow me off with this, there is enough proof with all your help. I tried the test from work and the speed was amazing...which still boggles me.

Yes, it is quite strange that I get better download speeds than you all. Could it be that it is early morning (and low load on the server) in the US right now?

I don't think the server load is even high. When I first complained about the speed, they looked right into that part of it and said it was actually fairly low. My guess is that it is low because people have a terrible connection to the server causing less traffic. :D Maybe there are different ways into the data center and the majority are going through a troubled part of the data center or backbone? I just don't know how they wire these things up so it's hard to determine...apparently it's hard for the data center to determine as well since they needed the tracert's.

Forgive my ignorance, but other than telling you which logical (or do these represent actual physical machines?) addy's the data is passing through, what does the tracert tell you usefully[/i] about data throughput? Same question for the ping, do these tell you about a single random packet, and I see some 100% failures, and only a single 47% in line 17 of Merc's ping; so what is there useful there with respect to the entire amount of data passing through when d/l'N 24.5M of data?

My knowledge is very limited, but what I've read is that sometimes when traffic is heave on major hubs, traffic gets rerouted to other major hubs; and sometimes this can cause major slow downs in certain parts of the country? Something like when there are major snow storms in one part of the country and this has a domino effect of flight delays all over the country as far as major airline traffic hubs?

I'm on dialup still, but my father has DSL, slowest speed of 384k? because the copper telephone lines in the area have so many noise filters in line and the distance to the local CO is near the maximum limit for even 1.5Mbps service. But I've done tests on that line at dslreports.com and the speeds are almost always well below 384k, sometimes below 48k of a dialup modem. My friend that lives in Santa Monica, Calif. has same problem with telephone lines, such that the other area teleco Verison has told him the line quality is so bad, they won't even consider installing DSL in his location. The claim his neighborhood will be 1st in line for pilot fiber optic connections (they have plenty of fiber optics underneath the streets in these areas, but neither of the teleco's on the westside of LA are interests in spending a dime on upgrading connections to residential or common business customers).

Ah, if this were only like S. Korea where something like 60% of the country (probably only urban areas) is already fully fiber optic. :(

You can do speed tess with a much smaller data file, through as many points accross the country, as you like http://www.dslreports.com/stest

But what does a tracert for all of these data paths do, as far as helping determine where the slow down is? I see 100% loss on one line of the Swede's ping, yet that pathway is just flying for speed?

I am omnipresent
Almost all the traffic we're dealing with is passing between Very Big Routers in a datacenter someplace. It's POSSIBLE that the routers in question are load balanced somehow so that the IP address is not representative of a physical interface, but the datacenters I've been in seem to just use bigger (single) routers. WANs are complex enough without throwing in extra hops or extra equipment that adds latency.

What we're looking for here is some commonality between those reporting slow transfers and a problem somewhere along our route. The internet is a mesh with bazillions of different ways to get to any point, but typically packets from one point takes the same path to get to a destination. At some points, all packets meant for the same destination WILL converge on a common path, and that's the part we're most interested in.

This was odd! My download speed is a lot slower on the 100 Mbit connection at work . 12 minutes and 22 seconds versus 52 seconds from home.

Now I am home again and the download speed is just around 460 kbyte/s as before.

Tried it on a full, completely empty T-1 and got about 100KB/s (as expected).

I just got the following info from the hosting company:

Hi,

We just got an update from the DC stating that issue seems to be with the physical network to which they are connected and have contacted the network providers on this matter.

Thanks everyone for your help!

They've found the issue and fixed the problem! :king:

We have an update from the DC, they have changed a line card in one of the core routers which was causing the error.
Please have a check on this now.

Here is a sample download speed I just had:
