In other lens news..........

The new $2800 Nikkor 70-200/2.8E is stellar. It's even better than the legendary Canon 70-200/2.8.

There is rumored to be another (4th gen.) Canon 70-200/2.8 coming as well. I just find the weight of an f/2.8 to be excessive along with other gear such as a 100-400 or similar, but I'm not much of a wide aperture user. They should update the 70-200/4 IS. Although it is a fine lens, improvements in AF, IS, and IQ are possible after a decade.

Tried the old Sigma 150 macro on the fer de lance and it would not focus reliably. They say the snakes can be dangerous.

Was the snake confined in a cage or just laying on the ground? Those snakes are dangerous. I would not be attempting macro shots of that snake, even under well controlled circumstances.

Lunar, or anybody else...Any experience using a DSLR to take photos/movies of the sun during a solar eclipse? Filter suggestions, tips, etc?

It was on set. They want at least 6 feet, but I may have been a little closer. ;)

What's Rule 34?

35 is: Always watch the watchers

Edit: Oh, not a Gibbs rule 34. An internet rule 34. Google cleared that up for me.

According to the Wikupedia, Rule 34—"If it exists, there is porn of it – no exceptions"—is a prevalent meme that states that Internet pornography exists concerning every conceivable topic.

This. Cough up the pics. Don't recall ever seeing BUSTY snakes.

The people were BUSY. Some snakes were highly active others were semi-torpid and many in between.

My view is not Pics or it didn't happen!!!, but that unless images are of high quality they do not exist. ;)

Canon will become the next Intel, with their microscopically small updates, if Nikon goes away. Canon users need a viable Nikon and vice versa.

Most of the layoffs were reported earlier. The DL cancellation was a two-factor deal, both the market decline and the technical issues that would require substantial redevelopment.

When do you think digital viewfinders will satisfactorily (not ideally, just "enough") replace mirrored systems? I suspect we are close, and that would reduce the cost (R&D, Mfgr, service) considerably.

The DLs were delayed so long and had some serious issues it's probably better that Nikon just "discontinue" them before they even launch, then in 2018 reintroduce working/better cameras with a different name.

Nikon needs to condense their DSLR product lines.

D3xxx series.
D5xxx series.
D7xxx series.

D6xx series.
D7xx series.
D8xx series.
Dx series.

Just TOO many DSLRs, especially with most people using cell phones now a days.

Meanwhile Canon has another Rebel and a camera in between the former 70D and 80D. It's just crazy.

The Sony a9 was announced today.
I don't quite get it, but Sony products usually need a few versions to reach the purpose.

Seriously considering going to the a9 Lunar mentioned above from the 7DII. Smaller, quieter, and I like the feature set. Of course, that would mean a firesale of barely used Canon gear...

You are going wide rather than tele I assume. It's a strange camera choice for most uses. Are you getting an A7r II as well or just the low-res event body?

I don't need more than one body, and 20MP+ is enough. Full-frame would be nice for DoF, shutterless would make the multi-hour time-lapse sessions less guilt-ridden, silent photos create more options for the family shots. From what I've seen, the A9 is better low-light?

I'm sure it has better noise than the a7R II and worse than the a7S II, but I think it remains to be determined how much if any it is improved over the a7 II.

Don't jump the gun too soon. Sony will probably release an updated/fixed A9 six months later. I wouldn't be an early adapter considering the $4500 + lens cost(s) to get started.

That's always good advice. I'm really hoping for an improved a7R III with 50-60MP at 8-10 FPS.
The a9 has the crippling problems of only one fast memory card slot and lack of lossless compressed RAW files. There was some improvement a year or so ago when a lossless RAW format was introduced, but it buggers the mind why Sony is still 15 years behind the others in file format and processing. :( Nikon and Canon have essentially continuous RAW file shooting with the CFast and XQD cards.
