Hmm. I seem to have found a reason to keep IE around, at least for a while. It is not possible to use the rich text editor in MSN groups or Hotmail. Anyone know of a solution for this?

One problem I am having with Firefox is how it handles a large number of tabs that all contain a large number of images. The amount of memory that is used is incredible. I switched over from Crazybrowser, which is based on IE and this has never been a problem before.

Let's say I have 30-40 tabs open all with a bunch of images and then I minimize Firefox, it pulls everything out of physical memory and puts it into VM, which makes for a pretty good slowdown. The same when I restore the window, it is forced to move several hundred MB from VM back to physical memory. There has to be a better way for Firefox to handle this.

Right now Firefox is using 62MB in physical memory and 88MB in VM for only 6 tabs, none of which contain any large images. If I open a few tabs with large images then memory usage jumps to a couple hundred MB pretty quickly.

Are the pages you have open actually that big?

The 6 tabs that were open when I wrote my previous post aren't very big at all. One was the Storageforum reply, two are Gmail, and the other three were just text pages not more than a few KB in size with a couple small jpg ads.

I can see how this would be an issue. I currently have 10 tabs open (3 SF, 2SR, 2 SPCR, 2 /., and a gmail) none of which have killer graphics at all, but there goes 50MB of Mem and 42MB of VM. Though I did have a hard time getting it over 100MB, even visiting the NASA site with tab-happy right-clicking.

An interesting note is that these same pictures had 3-4x the useage when viewed in Outlook as part of a message.

I know that this issue has been largely (not completely) fixed in Mozilla. I haven't really noticed it occuring so much in Firefox unless I've left the browser minimized for some time.

Type about:config in the url and edit the following properties:

network.http.max-connections 32
network.http.max-connections-per-server 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-proxy 8
network.http.max-persistent-connections-per-server 4
network.http.pipelining true
network.http.pipelining.maxrequests 8 (Entering a number higher than 8 will not have any effect)
