Why not just use the Windows Firewall, with IPSec rules to block outgoing connections?

That is a royal pain in the ass to set up, Chewy.
So much crap just runs over port 80 when its native port is blocked that it's really not worth worrying about outbound stuff.
If there's an application I don't want to talk to the internet, I'll firewall it on an external (real) firewall rather than rely on Windows software.

1. Not everyone has the luxury of a hardware firewall. I know of a particular college student who, not only probably could not afford one, but also isn't allowed anything between the wall and his computer except an ethernet cable.

2. It's nice to know what is trying to use the Internet when it's trying to do it. Furthurmore, it's nice to let some programs use the Internet and restrict others, even though they may be using the same ports.

3. More protection is better than less.

I see one reason is to close a particular port when your done using it, so you secure your computer, and, it's slightly easier then using the hardware router...

Yes. It's an additional layer of protection for your computers. It's possible that someone could find a scriptable remote exploit or worm for Linksys WRT-whatever that exposes your internal network, and at that point, you'll be wanting your internal software firewall again.

Other reasons to run a firewall: It's possible that your wireless could be hacked (if you run wireless), granting someone access to your home machines. Another possibility is a friend bringing their laptop over & connecting to your network and their laptop (unknowingly) being infected. Still another possibility is downloading & running an app that was corrupted (intentional or not) to include a malware payload. A decent software firewall will monitor for outbound traffic as well as incoming and can stop the malware from 1) calling the mother ship and 2) propagating to your other machines.

Those same reasons are why everyone should be running anti-virus and anti-spyware. You might practice excellent computing habits but that doesn't protect you from the actions of others. And while Macs have fewer known exploits than Windows and Linux has fewer still, that does not mean they are immune.
